A Blind Hermitage
Category Story Event
Type Story
Data ID 298703

A Blind Hermitage is an event that begins when interacting with a Blind Hermitage discovery.

Story description[]

A single candle burns in the cave entrance, not to offer light, but to deepen the darkness beyond. Airs of Blind Hermits(HermitDescription)

Trigger conditions[]

Area: Limbo
Frequency: Always (100%)

Interactions[]

Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Gather a fragment of a lost sigil
You ignore the hermit and focus on the marked tablets by the cave entrance. One is broken – this half holds a piece of a sigil.
Without apparent objection
The sigil appears to have been drawn in blood. The split across it is so neat, it can only have been deliberate. The sound of jostling pottery is musical. The hermit's head jerks towards you, but they do not attempt to stop you when you pocket the fragment.
    • Sigil Fragment = 1 [You found a piece of a sigil at a Blind Hermitage. You need two more]

Assemble the fragments of the lost sigil
Here, among the refuse, is another shattered tablet. It fits the piece you already possess. On both, the sigil is scrawled in dried blood. It is a match.
Loss?
As you head for your locomotive, the hermit chases after you. You are forced to strike them to remove their clutching hands from your sleeves, from feeling at your pockets.
Ascertain whether he has Caddies of Dried Tea
You have heard a troublesome monk was driven out of the monastery at Achlys, and stole a supply of tea. Is this he?
    • Opportunity: A Hermit's Tea ≥ 1 [Rumour has it that a hermit is stockpiling tea to exchange for Mysteries of Eleutheria. Blind Hermits can be found throughout Eleutheria, but often seek out the wilds around Caduceus or the House of Rods and Chains]

    • Fortune challenge (60% to win)

Failed event
The wrong hermit
You ask, but he only raves at you. You push past him to search the cave, finding only bat droppings and spatters of candle-wax. The hermit shrieks imprecations at you. You will get nothing else out of him now.
Successful event
Tea-stained stone
The scent of dried tea wafts from the cave. This appears to be the correct hermitage.
Press gang the hermit into your crew
Drag them from their cave. Put them to work.
Kicking and screaming
The Blind Hermit's emaciated muscles are no match for your grip. You drag the terrified wretch from the cave, where the cold Eleutherian light glints in the tears of their milky-grey eyes. Limp and defeated, they put up no further resistance.
Advanced query needs investigation

Trade supplies with the Hermit
What have they learned here? They may be willing to share.

Game note: This will trade Supplies for a Savage Secret and a little more.

The food of knowledge
The Hermit takes your supplies, beckoning you into their cave. They shrink from the dim light of your candle, cowering and chewing on their ragged, bleeding fingernails. The cave rock shows the effort of their labours; wet crimson symbols and scratched down snippets from the other side of sanity. Behind them all, a truth to be whispered, but never spoken.
Share a meal with the hermit
Stew warms over a small fire. The mixture is thick with salted meat and root vegetables. The hermit peers at you and nods encouragingly.

Game note: If you are starving, this will buy you some time.

Filling, yet moreish
The hermit has two spoons, both clumsily whittled. In the dim light, after a good rub with your sleeve, one looks clean enough. The stew is everything its aroma promised: thick with reassurance, offering a spicy warmth that pushes away the cold of the Wilderness.

When you are done, the hermit has a turn – prodding and fishing in the stew for the best lumps of meat. They beam at you, chewing open-mouthed. It is a friendly, if unpleasant, sight.

Hunger(BiteToEat)
Advanced alteration value probably needs examination.

Whisper secrets to the Hermit
Their secrets for yours. A fair trade.

Game note: This will get you a Crimson Promise, an Eleutherian Mystery and a little more.

A secret for a secret
Whisper secrets to the hermit
Their secrets for yours. A fair trade.

Game note: This will exchange your Secrets for a Condemned Experiment and an Eleutherian Mystery.

A secret for a secret
Observe the hermit
Something still drives them, down here in the dark.

Game note: This will give you an Eleutherian Mystery.

What remains in darkness
Entrust a Death in a Jar to the hermit
They look probably trustworthy. Perhaps you can convince them to look after this Death in a Jar.
Failed event
Rebuffed
As soon as they learn that the jar holds a death, the hermit becomes violently agitated, and you are forced to retreat to your engine to maintain your dignity. Apparently, they don't want a death near them, in case it draws other deaths. What a silly superstition. Still, maybe you'd better store this somewhere other than your footlocker for the time being.
Successful event
Safe and sound
You don't say what's in it, of course. Instead, you invent some portentous gibberish and the Hermit is enthralled. They hide the jar in the back of their cave, promising to care for it until the day the last star dies. Good, good.
