A Defeated Knight is a Sunless Skies Story Event.
Story description[]
The Dismal Chamberlain lies prostrate before you, coughing and retching. "I will not give up," he snarls. "I will find another Minute to Midnight, and I will continue undergoing the trials. My quest for the Cup does not end here." Though covered in mud and bruises, and wearing filth-crusted rags, he somehow manages to convey an air of wounded dignity.

Why was he pursuing the Cup?
The Chamberlain was one of the Deathless, reprieved from mortality by Her Renewed Majesty's grace. Why did he seek another form of immortality?
|
|
Grand ambitions
"Do you think I was happy owing my existence to a tyrant? To someone who could confiscate my remaining life at her whim? Believe me, I have good reason for switching my allegiance to another Queen. A greater Queen by far."
The Chamberlain smiles, his eyes dancing. "Besides, the Martyr-King's Cup offers greater things than a mere lack of death. I have been studying it for years. At first, my interest was merely academic, spurred by the stain beneath my Mausoleum. I never expected to become a quester, but... Every time I slept, I dreamed of moonlight."

Prise the fountain pen from his twitching fingers
Is this really it? Is this a Minute to Midnight?

A Minute to Midnight
"You've seen it in the moonlit world," says the Chamberlain, watching you like a hawk with a grudge. "A black sword with a red hilt. That's one of the Minutes to Midnight. Like Her Highness, it just takes a different form over here."
As you tuck the fountain pen in your pocket, a squad of burly men turn the corner, led by a musclebound overseer with a bandaged face. "That's him!" shouts the overseer, pointing at the fallen Chamberlain. "Stabbed me right in the eye with a pen! Called me a demon, he did!"

Distract them long enough for the Chamberlain to escape
It doesn't seem sporting, somehow, to allow him to be arrested.
|
You set upon the officers, making up a story about a murder scene halfway down the road. Despite the overseer's protests, they rush to investigate, giving the Chamberlain more than enough time to climb to his feet and stagger away.
By the time you turn back, he is gone.

Allow them to arrest the Chamberlain
He's a rival, and he's sworn to reach the Cup before you. This is in your best interest.
|
Kicking and squirming, the Chamberlain is lifted to his feet and dragged away by the burly overseers.
