[22] The poisoned fruit cluster around the healthy one like vultures. \"All our counsels go awry,\" pleads one handsome head, its sideburns speckled with grey. Another, pinch-lipped like a sour old lawyer, nods. \"Yes. That's because we are a fraud. We've pretended to know more than we do, and others – through kindness or gullibility – have believed us.\" A chorus of nods. The head that resembles your aunt has no answer.
[24] The other heads turn their attention to you. \"Who's this?\" the pinch-faced one demands. \"Are you new?\" \n\nA younger head, fair-haired and mournful, turns her attention back to their victim. \"A stranger. Someone who hasn't known you as long or as well as we have.\"
[26] The other heads grumble. \"Don't be dramatic. It was a little exaggeration for rhetorical effect,\" says the handsome head, silkily. \"Our point was clear: we have done more harm than good. Must I list our failures? I have plenty of time.\"
[28] The accusers scoff. \"And that's enough, is it?\" the pinch-faced head demands. \"To try, and to falter? As long as we did our best, that's what matters – never mind those we fail.\" The handsome head looks at her, pityingly. \"Do you really believe that?\" he asks.
