A Meeting at the Crossroads is a Sunless Skies Story Event that begins when interacting with a Crossroads discovery.

Story description[]

A figure waits by the signpost. In silhouette, it resembles a woman in a long skirt. Up close, you hear the clatter of chitin, wrapped in layers of veils and shawls that smell of harsh antiseptic. A Measurer, the stories go. Few of them have happy endings.

The figure introduces itself as Airs of Crossroads(Identity), and offers charity, of a sort. "A measured charity," to be exact. A Gift(Warning)

Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Help the Princess meet the Measurer's demands
"I left an old thing in Piranesi," says the Incognito Princess to you both. "But – if I go in the main doors of that beastly place, I can't leave. You need to change to do so, and I'll only do that on my terms." The Measurer listens, and makes its demands. The Princess looks at you and smiles.
A Princess' Reward
The Measurer takes the chart and holds it, as if it can ascertain its merit by its mere weight. Seemingly satisfied, it produces a candle made of beeswax. "Oh, St Solonace's Candle!" says the Princess, clapping her hands in delight, "How ideal! St Solonace: a rebellious story cast unto a well."

"Head to Piranesi," says the Measurer. "Light it. It will take you to your old self. The path will remain open as long as a tale of terror is being told." The Measurer passes it to the princess, then takes her hand. "When you come into power, remember me," it says.

"I will try," she says. "But if I do that, I may remember you touched me without permission." Her smile is without malice, but not without threat.
Bribe them to let you copy the lost sigil
The Measurer extends a carapaced, many-fingered hand – a sigil is branded on its palm. It closes its fingers with a click before you can see more.
Tucked into its skirts
The Measurer snatches the artefacts from you and holds them to its chest. It clicks and croons contentedly. Almost absently, it extends its free arm towards you. You copy the sigil from the Measurer's outstretched claw. You will have to return to your cabin to identify it.
Accept a gift of gemstones
You crave that which glitters. The Measurer is eyeing your crew thoughtfully. Perhaps it is lonely. Perhaps it is assessing comparative weight.

Game note: You will gain 4 Casks of Navaratine Gemstones.

And it shall be yours
Airs of Crossroads(DealAccepted) It disappears behind the crossroad post. As you return to your locomotive, the quarters are a little quieter. Several faces are absent. They must have disembarked suddenly, perhaps. The Measurer has taken a down payment. In your own cabin, you find a gnarled black-wood box placed neatly upon your pillow. Within, a wealth of Navaratine gemstones, blood-red in the candlelight.
Accept a gift of sustenance
The crew must be fed.

Game note: You will gain three Supplies, an Eleutherian Mystery and a little more.

Bribe the Measurer to dispose of a Death in a Jar
They stalk the old paths and routes of Eleutheria, and must know countless hiding places. Of course, they do nothing for free.
A transaction
The Measurer reaches out gloved, stiff-fingered hands that click bonily against the jar. In exchange for a curious artefact in your possession, it promises to place the jar at the far end of certain invisible distances, where none but its kind ever go.
Refuse
No favour ever came without a price.
A deal rejected
The figure withdraws its extended mandible and disappears behind the crossroad post. You return to your locomotive, ready to continue your journey.
