Story description[ | ]

An audience of silent devils and singing bees watch the Incognito Princess approach the edge of the well. She says her vows with a feverish delight. "I have learned of those who would prevent change, and how to thwart them. I have learned of sorrow – and will have sorrow no more! I have found the remains of my old self, and destroyed it to make way for the new. And, most of all, I have the most fantastic ring!" She leans over the well further. "I will be your queen," she screams. "Will you be my king?" A distant and incomprehensible bellow bursts from below. The Princess takes it as a yes, and glances at you meaningfully.

Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Pass her the ring
It would be rude to do otherwise. And potentially fatal.
"I do" segueing into screaming
She slides the ring onto her finger, and says "I do". Then the Princess slowly ceases to be.

Her transfiguration into the Queen of Bees would be the sort of thing you'd recount grandly to your peers' applause and wonderment, if only you could speak of it without shrieking. If you persisted with the foolhardy attempt, it's possible that during your gasping sobs you may manage to share some of the awful details. It is unlikely anyone listening would thank you.

The clearest moment in the kaleidoscope of memories is your own response to the impossibilities before you. What did you do?
You observed closely
Perhaps you believed you could learn something.
You looked as closely as you were able to bear, noting how the skin splits when the flesh becomes divine and the divine becomes incomprehensible abomination. Perhaps that knowledge will be useful in your work? The 'perhaps' was a small comfort when the vision finally overwhelmed you. When you recovered, the once princess, now queen was gone and only her empty skin remained. It followed you to your locomotive, beaming, ready to serve.
You exulted in her triumph
You were very proud of her.
When the world turned to horror, what could you do but cheer it on? She was a monster, becoming... but she was your monster, becoming. As you collapsed, even as you lost her forever, you were closer to understanding her irresistible drive. When you recovered, the once princess, now queen was gone and only her empty skin remained. It followed you to your locomotive, beaming, ready to serve.
You cowered
Perhaps you thought the safest thing to do was to lie on the floor, pretending to be dead.
It was horrible. You didn't like it. You hid on the floor until either it left, or your consciousness did. Whatever life the princess has she owes to you. Even with all you were hiding from, that was as petrifying as anything else – and an unfortunate notion to lose consciousness on. When you recovered, the once princess, now queen was gone and only her empty skin remained. It followed you to your locomotive, beaming, ready to serve.
Throw the ring into the well
You'll have no part in this abomination, no matter the cost.
At least they're together
With a flick of your wrist the ring starts to arc downwards, into the well. The princess gasps, and then reaches out her hand.

The ring stops, miraculously suspended, caught by the uncanny allure all matter holds for the Princess. It seems she can match the draw of a well.

If only for a few moments.

There is a strain on her brow, and the Princess starts to be pulled towards the edge of the pit. She does not relinquish her hold, unable to comprehend what is happening, even when it's too late. In the half second as she tumbles forward, she glances back at you, those divine eyes wide with alarm and panic. The connection of the moment is absolute. She cannot save herself, but she takes part of you with her.

The bees swarm angrily, their insect choir screaming her name, eventually growing silent and dispersing. The Devils shrug, and walk away.

At the lip of the well lies a glittering tiara. Her finest one, now yours.
