A Memorial is a Sunless Skies Random Event.

Story description[]

A Cryptic Stoker wants to hold a memorial service for the crew that have recently died in your service.

Judging by his tattoos (of a storm, studded with mouths) and his rattling collection of talismans, the ceremony is unlikely to be Christian.

Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Forbid it
Pagan rites have no place here.
Forgotten
"As you say," the stoker bows, and takes his leave. After that, the crew are sullen and close-mouthed. Do they wonder if, when their time comes, you will deny them a service too?
Attend, and deliver a eulogy yourself
You would like to say a few words.

The curse of the living
The crew listen, impatiently, as you recount the names of the dead. You get the impression you're not the main attraction. They become more animated when the Cryptic Stoker takes the floor. He speaks of lost voices carried on the winds; of a wandering storm; of Yesterday's House, where those who were extinguished are remembered.
Successful event
Parting words
The crew nod their heads as you speak, punctuating your sentences with solemn, approving grunts. Afterwards, the Cryptic Stoker steps forward. He face is painted storm-grey, and his talismans rattle like distant thunder. He delivers the ceremony in a dozen different voices. He speaks of the duty of the living to remember what has passed.
Conduct the ceremony yourself
A service like this should be delivered by a professional. And you were a priest before you were a captain.
Failed event
For wide is the gate, and broad is the way
Your ceremony is Anglican, solemn, and proper. A selection of carefully-chosen and appropriately mournful hymns. A poignant reading from Matthew. But the crew shuffle, restless. They want to be elsewhere. Later, you learn another ceremony took place, secretly, in the engine room. A ceremony to the Storm that Speaks, who is less forgiving than Christ, but closer.
Successful event
Thy kingdom come
Today, you are not their captain. You are a mediator between this world and the next, between the living and the dead. You lead them in a handful of doleful hymns, and deliver a short sermon on Christ's death and resurrection. You recite the names of the dead, and some words about each provided by their colleagues. The crew are solemn, wrapped in their own recollections.
Approve and attend
You find a place at the back of the room, and remove your hat.

Tempestuous
The Cryptic Stoker appears before the gathered mourners with his face painted storm-grey and his amulets rattling like distant thunder. He speaks of a storm that remembers, his voice reeling between a croaking approximation of an old woman's voice, a shrill mockery of a child's, a drawling attempt at a high society patriarch. The crew seem unconvinced by the outlandish ceremony. Perhaps they long for the sober, plodding Sunday services of their youth.
Successful event
The Storm that Speaks
The Cryptic Stoker has painted his face storm-grey. His talismans rattle like distant thunder. He orders the windows opened "to let the sky in" and proceeds to deliver his rites – a mishmash of Anglican practice, New Sequence hymns, and nonsense.. In his patchwork ceremony he speaks of the inadequacy of the present and the sanctity of the past, where the dead still live. He speaks of a storm that gathers lost voices to itself.
