Story description[]
You are under scrutiny. The slightest twitch of your finger is observed from a thousand angles, and judged. It's taking a toll. Your eyes are baggy, your skin flaking. And your teeth, your teeth...
One jostles loosely in your gum. You lean over your sink, nudging it free. It plinks into the basin, bouncing like a bloodstained die.
Gazing up at the mirror, you find a glistening eyeball nestled in the gum beneath. It blinks languidly.

A regrettable commotion
It's a simple operation, if finicky to perform on oneself. It's made more difficult when one of your crew barges into the room without knocking and catches you halfway through the procedure. He screams and screams.
What on earth is wrong with the fellow? Has he never seen anyone perform ocular self-dentistry before? Bloody-mouthed, you try to comfort him, but this only seems to unnerve him further.

A great awakening
You'll need to cultivate more eyes if you are to return the gaze of the stars. Hundreds. Hopefully more are budding, as it is not much use to be able to contemplate the inside of your own mouth.
You exit your quarters, trying not to distract yourself by staring at the rolling enormity of your tongue. You can't help but smile in a way that makes your crew flinch. The new eye shall be your pleasant secret, for now, though you'll have a harder time hiding the next one.

Business as usual
When you pass a crewmember in the corridor, your strangled greeting and contorted smile makes them shudder. An engineer makes a wry comment over breakfast, and you roar with such abrupt laughter that the silence afterwards seems shocking.
As the day drags on, your crew seem to be avoiding you. Do they suspect something?
