Description[ | ]

Scorn Flukes are a Sky-Beast of Albion, Eleutheria, and The Blue Kingdom. They can be found near Avid Horizon in Albion, various locations in Eleutheria, and around the center of the map in The Blue Kingdom. In combat, Scorn Flukes shoot a projectile that explode and deal 6 damage, and strong enough to push your Locomotive around even if you didn't get hit by the projectile directly. It also has an aura damage that deal (?) damage.

Help the Navigator show his friend the defeated monster
The Navigator has put on a sky-suit and re-tied Altan's wrists and ankles. But he can't put on the corpse without assistance.
    • Fortunatenavigator icon The Navigator's Promise = 70 [The Fortunate Navigator wants to defeat a Scorn Fluke, Senior Spinster or Undeparted. He has suggested you search Eleutheria for the monsters]

Abrupt relief
The Navigator floats over to the defeated monster and does a triumphant jig on its remains, almost toppling over when he leans to give Altan a better view. For all its grotesqueness, such unbridled delight is contagious – the crew can't resist smiling. When the clambers back inside, he shrugs Altan's body to the floor, then props it against a wall. He unseals his helmet and turns to you: "We defeated that!" He holds up his hand. "Look – I'm shaking!" He sighs, suddenly exhausted.
Create the Wrath of Heaven
As you look upon the spasming remains of the scorn-fluke, you remember an idea that has seethed in your dreams of late. A contrivance. No. A weapon.

Game note: This will give you a large weapon that you can equip while in dock, or sell to an equipment shop.

A remarkable discovery!
One engineer follows you towards the corpse; the rest watch nervously from your engine. Between two folds of flesh you find a ripe, tumorous mass – bristling with undying spines. The tumour seems impervious to the rotting-death of the Fluke's body.

The engineer passes a saw. The canker quivers resentfully, but it is cannot respond to the indignities you inflict upon it.

Aboard, you bind it in metal, and tame it with the Correspondence. It flares with sullen pleasure.
Tear off a trophy
The Fluke thrashes and ululates, fighting its end desperately – as if more than its own life depended on it.

Game note: Success will substantially reduce your Terror.

Your prize
As the beast writhes, your feet slip on the sclera. A crewmember is nearly impaled as they lurch to catch you. The piece you rip from the eyelid is taller than you – it will make an awe-inspiring banner. Your signaller drags it aboard your locomotive. It takes some wrestling, but with the help of a stoker, she hangs it in the hall between the engine room and the bridge.
Successful event
Your prize
The piece you rip from the eyelid is taller than you are – it will make an awe-inspiring banner. A stoker fusses over where to hang it: too close to the fires and it'll become desiccated and frail, anywhere else, and it'll impede movement. You leave its final placement for the crew – a captain shouldn't get drawn into the niceties.
Investigate the Scorn Fluke
Drag the remnants of its victims off its spines. Collect their shattered treasures.

Game note: This will grant Otherworldly Artefacts and gain you insight into Scorn Flukes.

Lonely song
Its unhuman music rages and sobs. The polyphonic scream brings your crew to shuddering tears – discipline keeps them working. They are careful to maintain distance from the oozing grey exudate, yet an expulsion of viscous flesh spatters a stoker. It is several hours before he stops shouting; the fury passing as abruptly as it began.

Lonely song

Commune with the Scorn Fluke
Soothe the Scorn Fluke. Reach through its spines to touch its flesh. Croon assurances to it. You may be a while – you'd best take supplies.

Game note: As you commune with the Scorn Fluke, you will learn about it. As your knowledge increases, the options available will change.

Psychotropic gases
You perch precariously on the edge of the vast eye. The Fluke quakes; its flesh ruptures, releasing spurts of caustic vapours. This close, your sky-suit cannot entirely protect you: when you finish coughing, the dizziness is overwhelming. You can smell the Fluke's dying wishes, are ravaged by its regrets: the search it leaves incomplete; its fear that the search is impossible and will never end; the jagged, excruciating recollections of being outcast and the certainty that only the outcast have a chance of success. Eventually, an engineer works their way from your engine to help you back. Once you're through the external hatch, a stoker wordlessly passes you a cup of tea.

Commune with the Scorn Fluke
Impale your hand upon a spine. Combine your memories with its own.

Game note: This will grant a Moment of Inspiration. Failure may substantially increase your Terror.

Crossing a threshold
The spine is thin, and passes easily between your metacarpals. Searing pain settles in your jaw. Your injured hand is as a graze: this is the anguish of profound sorrow.

There is a scent of sweat, sharp like fear. The sound of a scream cut short. A crew – not yours – destroyed, punctured. (They had travelled far. Not far enough.) A Empyrean vessel, broken between rocks and the Fluke's bitterness. The crew, without time to don sky-suits, picked off one by one. (None knew of Axile. But someone must.)

When you return to your locomotive your crew is flighty and unsettled. Finally, your navigator admits: "We could hear you screaming from here."

There is a scent of sweat, sharp like fear. The sound of a scream cut short. A crew – not yours – destroyed, punctured. (They had travelled far. Not far enough.) A soul, bright and cheery drawn slowly from a weary tourist. (She claimed to have seen it all. She had not.) An Empyrean vessel, broken between rocks and the Fluke's bitterness. The crew, without time to don sky-suits, picked off one by one. (None knew of Axile. But someone must.) Body after body: broken, pierced, soulless. (Someone, somewhere, must have a clue to its location.)
Commune with the Scorn Fluke
Convince your crew to impale themselves on spines. Commingle your choirs.

Game note: Success will grant a Searing Enigma. Your Terror will increase. You will lose one crewmember.

Failed event
Betrayed?
Most of your crew find urgent jobs that cannot be abandoned. Only one steps forward: a stoker who has long been striving for promotion. The two of you pull on your sky-suits and work your way across to the Fluke. It jerks in its death throes; a spine slashes the abdomen of your stoker. Blood pours out and dissipates into the sky. A glowing viscosity is slurped from her body into the spine. On your return, your crew work in silence. They acknowledge you only as far as discipline demands.
Successful event
A familiar-feeling nightmare
One by one your crew volunteer. One by one they open their sky-suits and press themselves against a spine of the dying Fluke. The bristles pierce forearms, shoulders – in one case, a neck. Only one lingers too long, and cannot pull herself back.

That night, you dream of Axile. You wake abruptly, bitter with loneliness, desperate for warmth. In the dead of night, you meet the volunteers in the engine room; each shares the dream fragments that remained on waking.

"I remember my brother – sister? – as vast as a church." "The sky – bruise purple, black as stout—" "—but the storms: as violent and beautiful as music. I woke crying." "I turned towards the stars. I lost it. Was it my fault?"

"I need to go home."
Harvest Souls
Scorn Flukes use their vast spines to reap souls for the knowledge they might contain. You can extract what this one collected.
A meagre trove
You need to pluck several spines to reach the buboes on the Scorn Fluke's skin. One a space on the flesh is cleared, it's a simple task to slice a node open. The lumps ooze, dimly lit. The souls it collected are dull and inactive. It could not have learned anything of significance from them.
Rare event (50%)
Rich pickings
It takes a sharp knife and deft hands to get to the Fluke's glands without killing it completely. The souls need to be collected before the creature dies and the furious anger holding it together dissipates. Once the beast collapses, anything of value will be destroyed. The first nodule you slice holds nothing but warm pus. The second throbs with light, but bursts when pricked. Finally, after slicing through gelatinous cartilage, you draw out a soul: bright, warm, pristine. What explorer did the Fluke kill for this? What knowledge did it glean?
Use its spines to reinforce your damaged hull
The spines are thick as steel beams. Have your crew cut them from the Fluke's collapsing carcass.

Game note: Repair Hull; gain Terror. Your Hearts skill will affect how much Hull you will repair.

An unnatural repair
The Fluke's blubber begins to deliquesce. Your sky-suited crew hurriedly cut several spines free with bolt cutters. You have them used to brace weakened points of the hull. Then you excuse the crew, so they can scrub themselves clean of the Fluke's rainbowed ichors.
