Story description[]

The siren song of breakfast: clattering plates, the whistle of a kettle, the crew's oblivious laughter.

It's been a sleepless night. You arrive a ghost of yourself, hunched and trembling. The crew avoid meeting your eyes.

You let slip over tea and porridge that the stars are watching you. One of your crew, an odious boilerman by the name of Strithers, has the audacity to laugh.

Convince Strithers of the truth
He must understand!
The excoriation of Strithers
For some reason, your lengthy monologue fails to convince Strithers. Indeed, it seems to frighten him.

Realising he is but a simple man, you haul him by the collar to your quarters so he can see for himself. You jab a finger against the windowpane – see? Arrayed against the void, the eyes that glare from the sky? But he cannot. Frustrated, you shout until your voice echoes through the train. He shudders and weeps.

Over the next few days, your fuel dwindles suspiciously fast. When you next pass Strithers in the corridors, he is wearing a blindfold. Is he now working against you?
Appease the stars by jettisoning Strithers
Maybe Strithers is the reason they've been watching. Maybe he's done something to offend them. He seems the sort.
The expulsion of Strithers
It pains you, of course, but it is for the good of the engine. As you drag him to the hatch, you notice Smithers still has a smear of porridge on his chin. His last words are snatched by the howling wind as he tumbles into the sky.

As he dwindles to a speck, you realise that the stars are still staring. They spare not a glance for poor Strithers. What do they want from you?

You collect yourself. Your crew, also, are watching.
Hide in your quarters
Perhaps if you hide, the stars will forget you. And your crew will forgive you.
You hide in your bed for days, neither eating nor sleeping, hoping the stars forget you exist. Their gaze does not waver. When you finally emerge from your quarters, the crew have gathered to meet you. They are wearing blindfolds, but you can see burning starlight creep from beneath.
Explain Strithers' death to your crew
It had to be done, you see, because the stars are watching—
Breakfast has become funereal. The crew listen to your explanations in bleak silence. Their merciless stares remind you of stars.
