HermitDescription[]
- [0] The Hermit lingers at the edge of sight, their rags the remnants of a zee-captain's uniform. Two of their eyes are closed tight. The third, carved with scars into their arm, seems to stare through you."
- [26] The Hermit drags a sharp rock through their flesh, carving spiral patterns on already bloodied skin. Their milky-grey eyes stare at something beyond the cave wall. Their whispers could as easily be prophecy or madness.
- [51] The Hermit's puckered skin is a mass of fungal blooms and the purple-leafed flowers of twilight. They tend to them with a sliver of obsidian, delicately carving weeds from their flesh.
- [76] The air hangs heavy with the ancient stench of blood, gristle and decaying flesh. The Hermit kneels by the still breathing body of some no longer identifiable animal, their sticky fingers questing for whatever wisdom may lie within flesh and bones.
HermitObserve[]
- [0] The Hermit whispers to the darkness. They pay you no mind as you look at their few remaining possessions. A trading log from a place far away, a faded photo of a love last seen in Old London. A diary that begins with scholarly descriptions of Eleutherian wonders and ends with nothing but scribbles of the same eye carved into their flesh. The last coherent entry is dated November 1886.
- [26] The Hermit finishes carving their latest spiral and takes a drink from a gentle trickle of water running down from the roof of the cave. Their milky-grey eyes stare past you; their mouth occasionally forms a coherent word. Sweat builds on their brow. Their words might be truth, falsehood, or any flavour of madness in between."
- [51] The Hermit sits motionless, meditating under a steady drip of water that feeds their garden of flesh. Their unblinking eyes pay you no attention as you take the candle deeper into the cave. Roses bloom in the dark, curling up and dying in the presence of the light.
- [76] The Hermit works their haruspicy on the dying beast, occasionally pausing to stroke its fur and close its eyes to the pain. Their cave is filled with bones and rotting meat and a smell that makes your eyes water. Amongst them is the wreckage of what appears to be a zubmarine. A second glance at the bones reveals that not all of them are from animals.
HermitSecret[]
- [0] The Hermit's words are rapid in pace and low on coherence. They speak while painting a picture on the wall; another eye, like the one in their tattoo. Now your vision has adjusted, just a little, to the darkness, you can see the same symbol emblazoned a thousand times across the walls, sometimes open, often closed. Just for a moment, you understand. Just for a moment, you see.
- [26] The Hermit cups their hands beneath a gentle trickle of foul smelling water. They drink, then their words flow freely. They speak of the great charnel houses of Europe. How the Eagle will fight the Bear. How the Clockwork God will fall. A whisper of your own future too, never intended for your ears. A warning of what you may become in the dark.
- [51] The Hermit cuts a purple flower from their shoulder, licking the blood from the stem. They wrap it tight and place it in an old chipped cup full of gathered rainwater, stirring with the obsidian shard until it runs dark. They offer it. There is no refusing. When you wake up, only blessed fragments of nightmare remain. Burning at their core is an eye; the same one you now see repeated again and again in the Hermit's garden of flesh.
- [76] The Hermit accepts your offering and gestures for you to join them; to soothe the dying animal's pain in its last moments. They sift their fingers through its insides, plucking out organs and placing them on the ground in a careful but indecipherable pattern. When it is complete, the Hermit rests a compassionate hand on the beast's head and slits its throat in a smooth, practised manner. What they hoped to learn from this goes unspoken, but as you stand to leave, you see the pattern. An eye.
