- [1] As you walk down a crowded thoroughfare, you notice the masked spirits shuffling to one side and dropping reverently to their knees. Some are raising unlit candles; some have retrieved broken hourglasses from their robes. Others are scrawling complex symbols on the floor in chalk.
- [2] You notice that one of the spirits of the dead is lying and convulsing in the gutter. Its porcelain mask is cracked. The other spirits walk swiftly by, not even pausing to glance in its direction.
- [3] As you are making your way along a mean and narrow boulevard, you notice a Weary Spirit hurrying towards you. It clutches a jar containing its voice babbling frantically.
- [4] A servitor is hurrying towards you through a garden. Its robes flap, and its porcelain mask is discommoded. It clutches an array of scrolls: diagrams for a new form of servitor.
- [5] At the side of the street, trying to stop spirits as they pass, is someone not yet dead, an Antedeceased. He wears a mask, but it is pushed up to his forehead, nose in the air.
- [6] A crowd of masked spirits passes you: an elephant, a giraffe, two cats, a little boy, and many others. A red string is tied around a limb of each, but a loose end trails from the last creature, a cheetah."

- [1] The cause of the commotion appears at first glance to be just another spirit in a porcelain mask, taller than the others, his stride more sure. Luminous energies swirl at its feet.
- [2] Noticing your concern, a bureaucrat stops beside you. A voice issues from the jar tucked under its arm. \"It has a disease of the soul,\" explains the jar hollowly. \"Far rarer than any disease of mind or body, and more difficult to treat. The poor thing will likely unravel soon. Nothing to be done, unless you have something that might strengthen it.\"
- [3] Not far behind it are two dead bureaucrats, citing the Spirit's violations of its status as one of the Yoked. They are gaining on the Spirit, whose jar has now begun to sob hysterically.
- [4] It stops in front of you. The voice in its jar is scratchy and out of breath. It asks you if you can give it directions to the Forge of Souls.
- [5] He is pushing a cart marked 'Curios of the Blue Kingdom', made of wood and painted with a design of lotus blossoms. He catches your eye. \"Do you have any artworks or masterpieces of the Kingdom I could buy?\"
- [6] A Yoked spirit follows behind. It is holding the other, broken end of the string, and carrying a goad. Neither is doing it very much good.
