As you trudge across the desolate wasteland of London's discards, you step onto what looks like solid ground. It is not. It is a lake of sludge, concealed beneath a thin film of rubbish, and you drop into it like a stone.
After much spluttering and splashing, and the unfortunate ingestion of a pint or so of ditchwater, you clamber back out. But while you were beneath the surface, you saw a gleam... Much later your crew haul up an enormous steel orb. It is smooth, featureless, oddly lightweight. When you press your ear to it, you can hear very faint birdsong.
