Undeparted
Unseen
Type Sky-Beast
Location Eleutheria

The Undeparted are Sky-Beasts encountered in Eleutheria. Remnants from a time before the Twin Kings of Eleutheria were Halved, the Undeparted rot and crumble but cannot die, and mercilessly attack those who disturb them.

Description[ | ]

It spawns in Extinguishments, luckily not all the time. It releases two wheel-like projectiles that can arc towards the player and cause Hull damage. It's possible to dodge the projectiles via strafing. It also has a bomb-like attack that's like a white aura and can be partially covered up by the Extinguishment (the Undeparted itself may become invisible while in the Extinguishment).

Help the Navigator show his friend the defeated monster
The Navigator has put on a sky-suit and re-tied Altan's wrists and ankles. Because of his bulky sky-suit, he can't put on the corpse without assistance.

Abrupt relief
The Navigator floats over to the defeated monster and does a triumphant jig on its remains, almost toppling over when he leans to give Altan a better view. For all its grotesqueness, such unbridled delight is contagious – the crew can't resist smiling. When the clambers back inside, he shrugs Altan's body to the floor, then props it against a wall. He unseals his helmet and turns to you: "We defeated that!" He holds up his hand. "Look – I'm shaking!" He sighs, suddenly exhausted.
Find the Correspondence Sigil
Much of the work has been done for you. Much of the carcass has been flensed of flesh – either by your weapons, or by something that came before.
Marked by whose hand?
The sigil is in the very bones of the beast. Grotesque distortions suggest that the sigil did not occur naturally. It is almost as if someone contorted the Undeparted's bones into a sigil shape – like a carefully-tended bonsai tree.
Burn the remains
Expunge it from the sky.

Game note: Spend Fuel to reduce Terror and gain a Tale of Terror.

A good use of fuel
Pry out its eyes
Behind its strands of twiglike hair, its face is studded with gems of many colours. Are those its eyes?

Game note: Gain Navaratine Gemstones or Sovereigns.

Failed event Advanced alteration value probably needs examination.

Only ever half-dead
The gems were cracked in the battle. They come away in fragments, sparkling with gem-dust. You fill your pockets. Suddenly, the Undeparted begins breathing again, its breath thick and moist on your skin, rank as week-old meat. You leave a thin trail of glittering dust behind you as you hurry back to your engine.
Successful event
Treasure in the dark
Hammer and chisel in hand, you get to work. The stones come free reluctantly, glittering one by one into the satchel at your waist. The bone beneath the gems is warped, as if it had been broken, then the gems had been inserted and the skull left to heal, slowly, around them.
Partial success event (5%)
Scrimshaw
You work with a chisel, jamming it under the stones and prying them out. They glisten, wetly, their colours dark and sullen. All the time you listen to the laboured pumping of the Undeparted's lungs, working like bellows even though they are no longer connected to a throat or a mouth. You pry another eye free. If it is still alive, can that eye still watch you?
Harvest its bones
They look strong. Perhaps you can use them to brace the hull.

Game note: The higher your Mirrors, the more Hull you'll recover.

Obeying orders
You crew set reluctantly to work. The bonesaws sing.

Order your engine closer and listen to its whispers
The voices are not its own, but they serve it – as sheepdogs serve a shepherd.

Game note: Gain secrets or mysteries, but also Terror.

Failed event
A trick
You sit on the footplate and listen to the voices. They have a high opinion of you; of your courage and your wit.

Suddenly a crewman yanks you back, just before almost-invisible claws buckle the footplate you were perched on. Engaged in conversation, you had not noticed the Undeparted's claws vanish from sight.

They appear again now, one long finger-talon neatly spitting the crewman who saved you. Your driver calls for full steam, jetting safely away from the monster as it vanishes once more into the dark.
Successful event
Funeral rites
Sitting on on the footplate, you listen as the voices tell you of the Undeparted's current state. It was meant to have been put to death on its master's funeral pyre. But its master's twin turned to other matters and left the job half done. Now, the Undeparted are neither alive nor dead. You convey your sympathies.
Partial success event (5%)
In better times
Sitting on on the footplate, you listen as the voices whisper fervently to you. The Undeparted, they say, was not always a ravager and a night-stalker. Once, it and its kind were builders, and laid the roads that once criss-crossed Eleutheria. But that was long ago, before the Binary was Halved, and before a sun turned to night.
