An Unfortunate Case of Desiccation is a Sunless Skies Random Event.
Story description[]
The shades you recruited in the Blue Kingdom have gathered at the windows. As the light of strange stars falls on them, they begin to turn – inexorably – to salt.
Their skin desiccates, becoming glittering and rough. Joints stiffen. Extremities, then whole limbs, fall to the ground and break into chunks.
Some of the shades continue to stare, rapt, through the windows. Others look to you, their eyes quizzical in their masks. Some hurry to dark corners of your locomotive. It does not help. Soon there is nothing left of them but mounds of salt, and cracked porcelain masks. The Lost Love(salt_description)

Actions | Requirements | Effects | Notes |

Conduct a hasty funeral
What else can you do?
|
|
Goodbye
The ceremony is curt and hesitant. What can you say about the silent shades that served under you? You knew nothing of their lives, or their deaths. Your eulogy is hollow.
Did they know this would happen? Did they want it? Have they returned to the Blue Kingdom? Was a glimpse of other stars all they longed for?

Advanced alteration value probably needs examination.
|
Clean it away
Never speak of this again.
|
|
Emptier corridors
A broom suffices for most of it, though you need a dustpan and brush to get into the corners. You pour the accumulated salt from an exterior hatch. It shimmers in a plume behind your engine.

|
Have your cook sweep up the salt.
It will make your supplies last longer.
|
|
A lingering presence
The cook is discreet. The crew ask no questions. For a while, your meals are as silent as when the dead were still among you.

Investigate the Lost Love's quarters
Has she met the same fate as your unfortunate crew?
|
|
A second death
The floor has acquired a sparkling carpet of salt. It crunches underfoot.
Her porcelain mask lies shattered beside an overturned chair. The curve of her nose is still decipherable, the contour of a cheek, but the rest is lost. She too is gone, unable to persist beyond the bounds of the Blue Kingdom. You sweep up the remnants. What's left of her can be stored in a glass vase, formerly occupied by a wilted flower. Of course, the question remains: What is to be done with the remnants of the other shades in your crew?
