Check the hold
Nobody will pay you for a fractured egg.
An empty husk
You arrive to find the egg shattered into half a dozen pieces. Sat up against a crate beside it, a crew member is staring off into the distance. You rouse them gently and ask if they saw what was in the egg.

They nod as their eyes start to moisten. "Addressed As(CapitalInformal)," their voice is hushed. "I want to go home." When you probe as to where their home is, tears start to roll down their cheeks. "I can't... I don't..."

They can't work in this state. You release them from their duties – they can leave the locomotive when you next make port.

Game note: Curator's Eggs do not always contain the same thing. If another cracks, something else might occur.

A tasteful surprise
The friable shell has crumbled to reveal a delicate set of bone china cups, saucers, and plates. The floral pattern adorning them is surprisingly vibrant, given the assumed age of the egg.

The tea set sits stacked in the remains of the shell; it is tied lovingly with fine thread. It clearly meant a lot to somebody once.

A shock of spines
"Fluke-Needles." The crew member looking over the shattered remains of the egg is proud to demonstrate his knowledge.

They certainly look similar to Neathly spines, but these are far longer, and much older. They are covered in a gridlock of scars that is too ornate to have been caused by mere accident.

An indescribable smell
As you approach the egg, the first thing that hits you is the alien odour. It isn't unpleasant, but it is so unfamiliar to your senses that it is repellent. It's a smell defined by what it isn't – not sweet nor bitter nor foul. It is like home and Christmas and mourning.

The source of the smell is a small, near-transparent flower with petals that have angles in all the wrong places.

A husk within a husk
Laying in the hold surrounded by fragments of eggshell is a very small, very dead, Cantankeri. Its legs are curled up underneath it, hugging its carapace.

Every reported encounter with these beastly critters describes them as aggressive, as frothing with frustration. There is no similarity here. The way the mandibles rest on the face of this one is almost serene. Perhaps, in its final moments, it finally found peace. Perhaps it's the shock of that novel experience that killed it outright.

An unusual stone
You reach the hold as one of your crew staggers out retching. The source of their discomfort sits among the remnants of the Curator's egg. It resembles an old, weathered rock. It also looks like a bright, shining gem. In fact, it doesn't seem to be settling on being any one type of stone at all.

It shifts and phases in front of your eyes. Aeons of erosion and accretion dance across its surface. This stone has fallen victim to the ravages of unstable time. To observe it for long is nauseating. You have to look away.

A polished stone
The egg has a wide crack down the middle; something glossy and black sits in the centre. Prising the egg open, you withdraw a stone. The stone is darker than black – the colour of oblivion. As you turn it, it catches a light that is not present in the hold.

It's reflecting something more. It's possible to make out the shape of a building. Vast doors flanked by columns, dual shadows cast by twin suns. It is not a place in the High Wilderness, not now.

A mass of eyes
The egg is fractured, but still in one piece. You crack away some fragments of shell to create a hole big enough to peer inside.

Many eyes stare back at you. They are clustered like frog-spawn, glassy and dead. The same image is captured in each pupil: vast figures with leathery wings and rodentine faces hunch together. The creature's expressions are solemn and purposeful, the sort worn by politicians and diplomats. They seem absorbed by noble endeavours and matters of great importance.

A hatchling
As your engineer approaches the cracked egg, it jerks violently. The egg rocks. There is a low chittering, then stillness.

Your engineer takes a cautious step forward. Something leaps from the egg! You see a tangle of innumerable, many-jointed limbs! It scurries behind a crate.

In a demonstration of bravado, the engineer gives the crate an experimental kick. Nothing. They shove it aside to reveal a small ventilation shaft. Whatever the thing was, you haven't seen the last of it.
