This bull was a king of its kind. An isopod with the dimensions of an elephant, sheathed in layer upon layer of semi-calcified armour plates, all wrapped around the temperament of an embittered badger. Now, it is a ruin of muscle and shell.

Chisel precious stones from its carapace
The bull's outer layers are encrusted with stone from their long slumber in the crust of their dying world. In places, it is traced with shimmering veins of mineral.

|
Gleaming in the starlight
You and the crew chip chunks of gleaming stones from the shell. Some shines like quartz. Some glistens, banded like tiger's eye. Some is deep and solemn as polished jade.

Prise otherworldly artefacts from between its plates
Something is trapped in the segment-joints of its inner plates...

Old trophies
Bull cantankeri are aggressive, and once roused, will bash themselves against a foe until either it or they are dead. During the battle it's not unusual for fragments or belongings of their victims to become wedged in the bull's carapace.
The thing you pull free from this one is ancient and inexplicable. Perhaps a use will present itself.

Capture a lesser cantankeri clinging to the bull's underbelly
Is it a parasite? A servant? An apprentice? It is beginning to stir, having sensed the death of its host. Or master. Or teacher.

Eluded
Your crew try to tangle the younger cantankeri in a net before it wakes. Unfortunately, they are not gentle enough. The beast grumbles. It stirs. Then it thrashes its way free, sending crew spinning into the sky before it propels itself away.

A catch
With the aid of your crew, you manage to net the cantankeri before it has roused. It struggles, but the net holds long enough for you to wrestle it into more permanent lodgings. It bangs, irritably, against the bars of its cage.

The price of its freedom
Your crew have a net tangled halfway around the younger cantankeri before it realises what's afoot. It thrashes and bucks, knocking some of its captors from the bull's broken bulk. You intervene, tangling the last of its spindly legs in the netting while a cage is brought to hold the beast.

Use your cannery to extract its heart
It's said that something of value can be found in the shrivelled casing of its heart.

The damage is done
It is a messy process. Your cannery flenses away the outer shells until you reach its pale core. Alas, the heart is already broken and crumbled. A curio, nothing more.

The contents of a heart
No part of a bull cantankeri is notably edible. Most of its mass is stony plating, and any nuggets of flesh that can be found are stringy and sour as old milk.
So you put your cannery to another use. After much boring you reach its heart, grey and brittle. Cracking it open, you find a cluster of gritty hours inside: the preserved moments of an old bitterness upon which a common cantankeri dwelled, bloating into a bull as it accreted new layers of plating and spite like a pearl around a grain of sand, or a gallstone around its first fleck of crystal. | ||||
Retrieve the stomach

The shell is too tough to crack. But it is large enough to crawl into; and that's what the unlucky winner of an impromptu lottery is obliged to do. They are given a knife and a sou'wester to cover their sky-suit, and crawl into the shell. They emerge later, dripping, cursing, and clutching a withered knot of a stomach.
