Type | Sky-Beast |
Location | The Reach |
Description[]
A small herd of Cantankeri, engulfed in a fungus that has taken them over. They appear large and relatively spherical. You can hear them before you can see them, as a clattering, hissing sound. They are aggressive and will attack on sight. They fire semi-homing individual projectiles at your locomotive in all directions, and as they take damage, start firing additional projectiles in a fixed pattern in all directions. Their projectiles deal 2 damage.
Colonised Cantankeri can often be found near Hybras.

A palpitating mycological mass of fractured chitinous legs, frilled gills, and ruptured polyps: a growth of livid fungus has engulfed a small herd of cantankeri.
Now, it is dying. The herd grumbles with one irritable, faltering voice.

Dig under the fungus for precious stones
Sometimes, fossils or gemstones can be prised from a cantankeri's carapace. You'll have to carve your way through the fungus, though.
|
|
Digging deep
The fungal sheath is tough, fibrous. It must be dug out by the roots, which sprout between the cantankeris' segmented plates. You use a sharpened trowel and leather-gloved fingers. Beneath, a glitter of valuable stones...

Advanced alteration value probably needs examination.

Try to render the fungus edible
Eating unprovenanced celestial fungus is, of course, an ticket to madness, infection, or a colourful death. But hopefully, your cook can render it inert.

Side-effects
The fungus is boiled, roasted, and boiled again. It tastes of nothing at all, a fact in which the cook takes firm pride. The next day, many of your crew protest lamentably of the brightness of the sun. But behind the window, the sky is empty, cold, and black.

A three-stage process
Your cook is reasonably sure that if they cut the fungus into strips, hang it and smoke it for a fortnight, then fry it thoroughly, it will be digestible. He makes no predictions regarding its taste, though.

Partial success event (5%) | |||
Mixed results
The dull thud of your cook's tenderising mallet pounds day and night. After a thorough walloping, the fungus is cut into cubes and then, optimistically, fried in batter (the cook hopes it will disguise the unctuous texture).
The crew eat it solemnly. That night, you dream of a giant's garden, silent in the sunlight. A celestial season turns. As one, fleshy flowers bloom.

Destroy the remains
They are an unsightly blemish upon the sky.
|
|
Obliteration
Your guns thunder, again and again, until the conglomeration is pulverised. Your crew cheer, like spectators at fireworks.
