This page is about a player value. For named crew members, see Officers, or Category:Crew.

Crew is a quality in Sunless Skies. The number of crew you are able to carry depends on the size of your locomotive's quarters. The number of crew members you have on board, as well as the maximum you can carry, can be seen in the UI. When you have less than half your maximum crew, the rate at which you gain Terror is increased.

Certain actions require you to have a certain number of crew members on board. Officers are not counted, and do not take up space in the quarters.

When your last crew member dies, your ship will be staffed only by yourself and your officers. This results in a series of unpleasant events occuring that will likely end in either the destruction or stranding of your vessel, or the madness of your character.

Bacchae[ | ]

  • [0] Here in the heavens there is no defence from the maddening light of the stars. Your crew, if you had one, would no doubt have cracked by now: made vulnerable by the horrors you have witnessed, the dangers you have escaped, the glorious, awful secrets you have learned.\n\nBut you have no crew. There is only you, and you are fine. Absolutely fine. How could you not be? You are the lonely regent of this patch of the sky. The captain's chair is your throne. Your will is law. Is this how God felt, when the world was young?"
  • [1] Here in the heavens there is no defence from the maddening light of the stars. Your crew – on edge, weary, already haunted by their long journeys in the sky – are susceptible. One succumbs, and the madness leaps to another and another as quick as fire. Within a day, they rave with delusions and obsessions. Your engine is on the brink of disaster.

Mutiny[ | ]

  • [0] Is nothing loyal? Even your engine rebels! And you are alone now. There are no engineers to repair the draughty punctures in the hull, or the persistent rattle in that cluster of pipes beneath the boiler. When you fix one thing, another breaks. \n\nDepressingly, it is the rattle in the pipes which kills you.
  • [1] A gunshot thunders in the close confines of your engine. Boots clatter in the corridors. A mutiny has broken out among your crew!\n\n[There are no good options here. Each risks death.]"

Abosolutely fine. How could you not be? You are the lonely regent of this patch of the sky. The captain's chair is your throne. Your will is law. Is this how God felt, when the world was young?
  • [1] Here in the heavens there is no defence from the maddening light of the stars. You had assumed the shades in your crew were not susceptible; but they have been behaving strangely. \n\nFirst, silent processions through the hallways. Then lighting candles outside your room while your slept. They showed one of the crew their faces and made her wear a mask. Now she is leading them to your door. They have a rope, a knife of stone, and a mask, just for you. They want you to come with them."

EmptyHouse[ | ]

  • [0] You've been here before, you think. In dreams, perhaps, or in the span of time before you were born. It has waited for you to return.
  • [1] Wordlessly, your crew tether your engine. Ignoring your orders, some of them gather their belongings and prepare to disembark. \"This is our stop,\" one of them says.
