Check the hold
Where else would he go?
Joyful
Sure enough, the Inadvisably Big Dog is down there, exultant to have found such a wonderful playground. Upon noticing your arrival, he becomes even more excited, gambolling about in eager figures of eight. He's too big to simply cart away. You'll need to figure out how to tempt him from the hold.
Pet him into submission
How better to soothe the savage beast?
You begin with his shaggy, silken ears; a good scratching that gives you leverage to start combing fingers through his pelt, massaging his underbelly, and nuzzling into his neck. By the time you're done, you're both half-asleep, and the dog is exhausted into tail-wagging placidity.
Tire him with a game of catch
Surely, you have more endurance than a mere dog.
It is only a single game, but it stretches for more hours than is reasonable, the dog leading you round and round, until you're wheezing like a career civil servant. But it ends. At some point, you two stagger from the hold, slumped on one another. Hopefully, this won't need to happen again.
The Driver's cabin
Someone whoops from the direction of the Driver's cabin.
Put to work
The locomotive shudders and shakes like a race horse on the cusp of their last great adventure. You enter to find the Driver strapping goggles to the Inadvisably Big Dog. "He won't leave." the Driver shrugs, scratching behind an ear. "And since he won't leave, I decided he might as well be properly equipped. It was an effort to get him to sit still, and he's showing no sign of leaving."
Steer the dog out by his goggles
It isn't as elegant as a leash but one makes do.
It is also a remarkably clumsy process: gentle tugs, nothing that might cause discomfort. But eventually, you succeed at guiding him out of the Driver's cabin.
Make a spectacular distraction outside
If you can tempt the Inadvisably Big Dog's attention, he might leave.
You exit the cabin with the Driver and begin to raise a ruckus; you sing a giddy duet while banging a rhythm into the door frame. Luckily for everyone else, it does not take long for the Inadvisably Big Dog to emerge, ears perked in the direction of the noise.
Your Aunt's galley
A wavering scream rises from the galley. Is the Inadvisably Big Dog accosting Aunty?
Burning fury
The galley is smothered in flour. Every wall, every surface, every object is covered with a fine layer of it. Including your Aunt. Especially your Aunt. White motes float lazily through the air, while your Aunt struggles to get a hold of the Inadvisably Big Dog, who appears to be under the impression that they're playing a game. "He is your responsibility," she hisses. "Deal with him."
Lob balls of dough at the dog
Catch the Inadvisably Big Dog with his favourite game.
You bounce lumps of raw sourdough off the dog until he takes notice and snags one of the balls from the air. You attach a leash to his collar when he trots over to spit his prize into your waiting palm, all under the irate scrutiny of your Aunt.
Help your Aunt catch him
There's two of you and one of him.
Who knew that a dog so big could be so slippery? Over and again, you and your Aunt throw yourselves at the dog, only to have him wriggle free from your grip. Eventually, bored, he trots out of the galley, leaving you two panting for breath. "Never again," your Aunt mutters to herself.
The Conductor's Engine Room
Sonorous disgruntlement emanates from the engine room.
Grounded
Back-lit by the engine, the Conductor and the Inadvisably Big Dog present an unusual silhouette: your rambunctious canine has somehow pinned your Officer to the ground. "I cannot move," he mumbles from under a waterfall of golden fur. "Without hurting the dog. Please remedy this."
Wrestle the dog aside
You can take him. Of course, you can.
Except you can't. Not really. The dog proves a leviathanic opponent and his horrid breath an additional challenge. In the end, you do not so much win as you do convince the Inadvisably Big Dog that you're a better toy than the Conductor.
Convince the Conductor he can handle this
Best to leave this to the parties involved.
"If you are certain I will not hurt him..." murmurs the Conductor, still buried under the dog. It takes a few moments for the clay man to find his footing, but he soon rises to his feet, the Inadvisably Big Dog cradled like a child. They share a long look before the latter, with great purpose, licks the Conductor.
The Rats' Nesting Area
Rats. The Inadvisably Big Dog might have gone after your adorable, vicious rodents. Best check he's all right.
Play? Fighting?
The Rats' quarters are even more calamitously messy than before. A thin sheet of saliva coats everything. Including some of the rats. No one takes notice of you. Both the Rats and the Inadvisably Big Dog are... preoccupied.
Put the fear of God into them
Or at least, the terror that only a bugle can sound.
You find a bugle among the Rats' effects and put it to your lips. It tastes very faintly of fur, rust and copper. You blow through the instrument; the sound sends the Inadvisably Big Dog scampering in terror.
Grab that dog!
You leap forward, hands closing around the Inadvisably Big Dog's tail.
A mistake. His excitement knows no pause, no weight. The Inadvisably Big Dog drags you along as he tears through the Rats' quarters, barking rapturously. Eventually, you manage to crawl up onto the dog's back and wrestle him to the floor. With the help of the Rats, you wrestle the fluffy menace out.
