The Fortunate Navigator[ | ]

The Navigator is rarely in his cabin. He is popular with the crew, and card games and drinking sessions occur spontaneously in his presence. He is, of course, never the instigator.

Get to know the Fortunate Navigator
He often recounts escapades from his last engine – but rarely shares anything from before that. Perhaps a quiet cup of tea will draw him out.
Quiet appreciation
He clears his desk for the tea set by sweeping papers to the floor. "I'll tidy up, afterwards." The condition of his cabin casts doubt on that.

"I grew up a servant of the Eagle Khan's ambassador to London. His son, Altan, befriended me. We'd climb out the attic window to race urchins together." A wistful note enters his voice. "We never won."

The Navigator trickles a spoonful of sugar into his cup. Then another. "Could we stop at London?" He stirs and stirs the tea. "Altan died. I couldn't even be at the funeral. I want to say goodbye. But I'll need to speak with his parents, first."
Persuade the Navigator to talk
Even off duty, the Navigator is constantly checking the crew. He is avoiding being alone. Let him know that you've seen this before. He has to share his burden.
    • Fortunatenavigator icon The Navigator's Promise = 30 [The Navigator has been given the key to Altan's family tomb, in the Eagle's Empyrean. Speak to him aboard your engine to continue]

    • Unaccountablypeckish icon Savage Secret ≥ 2

A needed confidante
The Navigator joins you in his cabin. Finally, the words tumble out. "I thought I was all right. I just got on with my work and I was doing well."

He reaches beneath his bunk to pull out the book the Matriarch gave him. "Altan read this all the time. He'd act it out. Do the voices." It is the 'Epic of King Gesar'.

"Altan knew the true me. He shared his clothes. Helped me bind my chest the first time. Got me into my first fist fight." The Navigator sits up proudly. "He was my best friend."

"When we were children, I made a promise to him." The Navigator stares blindly at the book.
    • Fortunatenavigator icon The Navigator's Promise = 40 [The Navigator has been given the key to Altan's family tomb, in the Eagle's Empyrean. Speak to him aboard your engine to continue]

    • Unaccountablypeckish icon -2 x Savage Secret

What did he promise?
And why does it prey on him?
    • Fortunatenavigator icon The Navigator's Promise = 40 [The Navigator has been given the key to Altan's family tomb, in the Eagle's Empyrean. Speak to him aboard your engine to continue]

The promise
"When we were grown up, we would go exploring together. We'd go on great quests. Do mighty things." The Navigator takes several breaths before continuing. "We'd be heroes. People would write stories about us."

"I'm exploring the Skies and—" The Navigator turns his face away. "He didn't even get to leave home."

He wipes his eyes on his sleeve and stands, resolute. "I'm not going to break my promise. I will give him adventures worthy of King Gesar.

"Please, Captain. I want to go to Eagle's Empyrean. I'm breaking him out of his tomb. But I'll need your help. A Visitor's Visa(Navigator)
    • Fortunatenavigator icon The Navigator's Promise = 50 [The Navigator would like you to help him steal his friend's body from a graveyard in Eagle's Empyrean]

Ask what he intends to do with the corpse
As you enter the Navigator's cabin, he preempts anything you might say by shouting: "Bring me a map! Something that says 'Here Be Monsters'!" Then a pause. "Please. Addressed As(SpeechFormal)."
An eager demand
Altan's body is propped in the Navigator's desk chair, cushioned with his pillow. Embalming has preserved the body: its limbs are too thin, its skin a greenish-grey, but it looks peaceful. It faces the window, but – and it is probably for the best – the eyelids are shut.

The Navigator talks while he works – scrawling circles and routes on your chart. "King Geser was a slayer of demons. We must battle a monster of the skies. Something fearsome. Maybe a Senior Scrivener, a Scorn Fluke or one of the Undeparted. Something worthy of a song."

The map he returns to you is so enthusiastically marked that it is unusable.

    • Fortunatenavigator icon The Navigator's Promise = 70 [The Fortunate Navigator wants to defeat a Scorn Fluke, Senior Spinster or Undeparted. He has suggested you search Eleutheria for the monsters]

Game note: You only need kill one monster.

Speak with the Navigator about the battle
Was the fight all he'd hoped for?
A new goal
"Did you know that King Gesar once wrestled a giant tiger?" It seems the battle with the monster is already well out of mind. "Can you imagine that? Man versus tiger...

"I've never even seen a tiger. Not a real one. I would love to see one. We could show Altan, too." He nods towards the corpse, which is propped upright against the wall. It is wearing a top hat adorned with a particularly garish feather.

There are no tigers native to the heavens. If you want to see one, you'll have to find a magician – one skilled with mirrors. Perhaps the magician at Polmear and Plenty's can assist.
    • Fortunatenavigator icon The Navigator's Promise = 90 [The Fortunate Navigator wishes to show his friend a tiger. The magician in Polmear and Plenty's might help. You'll need to go behind the big tent to speak with him]

Check on the Navigator
He only speaks when questioned. He has missed the last three crew poker nights. You'll need to tease out what's caused his change in mood.
An eventual goodbye
You find the Navigator in a quiet corridor to the rear of the engine. He is staring out of the window. When you speak, he jumps. "D__n! Oh! Sorry, Captain – I thought I was alone."

He takes you back to his cabin. It is tidy. His desk is empty but for a fresh journal. His clothes are neatly folded on his footlocker. Altan's body lies on his bed. The body wears only the garments it wore in the graveyard.

"We have one last journey to make. One last adventure. It'll be an ending fit for King Gesar himself. I want to take Altan to Death's Door."
Console the Fortunate Navigator
He was about to fulfil his childhood promise, but he turned away from Death's Door. Altan's corpse only reminds him of his failure.
Resolute
The Navigator clenches the hot toddy you've brought him. "It's nice," he manages after the first sip, and "thank you," after the fourth. When the mug is finally empty, he turns to the corpse of Altan, propped to face the window. "The family tomb was no good. Too gloomy. Too dark."

"But you were at Death's Door. You saw them. Altan deserves better."

He puts his mug down, meets your eyes. "I've been thinking about alternatives."
Converse with the Fortunate Navigator
It's important to keep an eye on the well-being of your crew, starting with your First Officer.
