The Incognito Princess is an officer who increases Mirrors by 6, Hearts by 2, and Affiliation: Bohemia by 1.

Description[]

This tiara-wearing force of nature is definitely not a princess. Definitely not.

Obtaining[]

Can be recruited in Port Prosper and New Winchester as long as her story isn't completed yet in your lineage. It also requires you to have at least 100 echoes, though you don't lose them when recruiting her.

The Incognito Princess[]

From the tiara-crested brow downwards, there is nothing about the Incognito Princess that is not incandescent. She is like the sun, and about as dangerous to anything in the vicinity.

Wherever the Princess goes, she looks around with a surplus of curiosity and a complete lack of care.

Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Prove oneself a fit confidant
While she seems incapable of discerning between the two, the Incognito Princess seems intrigued by any mention of derring-do and abyssal horror.
The truth revealed!
Thrilled by your tales, the Princess invites you to her quarters. "I have a secret," she says, removing her tiara before donning a second, more expensive tiara.

"I am Queen Victoria's daughter," she says. "I trust your discretion."

It's a considerable ask. This must be the Captivating Princess, the daughter of Victoria who dwells in a miasma of rumours of excess, ranging from red honey to cannibalism.

A half asphyxiated starling has somehow found its way aboard. It flies to her hand. She pets it gently. "One is travelling to broaden one's mind before one takes on a new role. It would be a delight to meet with the engineers who keep the eternal ball of Perdurance tick-tocking away."

She smiles. You find yourself outside.
Ask her highness about the rumours
The crew whisper of all the engineers in Perdurance just disappearing, leaving naught behind but sporadic ghostly screams in the machinery. Is this true?
The chatter of starlings and a swift correction
Two dozen starlings buzz around the Princess' quarters. It takes some time to make yourself heard.

"It's not true," says the Princess, gesturing at a short woman with tall hair and spectacles. "My friend was an engineer. She hasn't disappeared. She's right here!"

The Analytical Suitor sits, staring adoringly at the princess.

"However, I'm glad you're here. I understand that a new poetical movement, inspired by the more melancholic strands of the Celestial School, is meeting in Worlebury-juxta-Mare. I wish to better study this notion 'sadness'. It is quite beyond me."

She smiles. You're outside.

Ask what happened at the poetry reading
A stoker whispered that the inn burned down killing all the poets. Is this true, your highness?
Once more, untrue!
"No, it's not true, Captain," says the Incognito Princess, lounging on a mound of dead starlings roughly shaped like a chaise lounge. She gestures at the floor. Crouching beside the Analytical Suitor is a gaunt man with wild eyes.

"My Poetical Suitor survived," she says. "You really should not listen to gossip. It is no time for gossip! My journey now takes a more serious bent."

She then explains her next destinations. Firstly, she has to find a crossroads in Eleutheria – she's of the opinion they're often south of the transit relay where one arrives. You'll require an Unlicensed Chart there. Secondly, a trip to see the devils in Carillon, on the matter of rings. She might need a handful of bee souls, for that.
An audience with the princess
So... what now?
Tradition
In the Incognito Princess' cabin, the Poetical Suitor and Analytical Suitor are stripping the skeletons of starlings of their flesh, arranging the bones by type, size, length and so on. The Princess passes time admiring her ring. Eventually she notices you, and some time after that she remembers to speak to you.

"One final step before the big day... and this is more politeness. I am a Princess, of course," she points at her tiara, to remind you, "So politeness is very much my thing."

She needs to find a way into the Mausoleum of the Prince Regent to say goodbye to her father.
Ask the Princess about the fact she's marrying... a devil?
Part of you doesn't want to know more. It's an easy part to ignore.
True Love
"Not a devil. My devil!" says the Incognito Princess proudly, rubbing her toes on the dead rug of her old self. The Poetical Suitor and the Analytical Suitor are trapped inside bird-cages made of bird-bones, wailing at the news.

"We must proceed to the Well of the Wolf," says the Princess, "It's not a wolf down there. My beloved awaits! Soon we will be together! Well, not strictly speaking together. That would be disastrous. But at least married."

The Princess takes your hand and looks you in the eyes. "It has been such fun to go on an adventure with a friend," she says. "You'll give me away, of course." It isn't a question.
Make conversation with the Princess
Why is she travelling?
Ambition
"For a change," she says, with a smile. "After all – I am a princess. The ambition of any princess worthy of the name is not to remain so."
A Secondment: Listen to the Princess' suggestion
"I have a suggestion," she informs you, expectantly.
A statement of intent
"We should go to London. I have always wanted to open a salon. My sister has one, so I should too." Her gaze is unblinking, but she does not press the issue further.

Game note: The Princess will generate Cryptic Benefactors for you while on secondment.
