The Inconvenient Aunt is an officer who can be recruited at London.
Description[]
The Aunt is formidable, but well-intentioned. She's a force better on your side than any other. And she does make rather good scones.

The Inconvenient Aunt[]
She has taken over one of your nicer cabins, which she has ruthlessly redecorated. There is a preponderance of ugly ornaments balanced precariously on tiny tables. Hideous antimacassars adorn every available surface.
Your Aunt occupies a felt armchair in the centre of the horror, where she spends her time either knitting or solving truly mind-boggling cryptic crosswords.

Converse with your Inconvenient Aunt
"I'm rather busy!" she insists. Perhaps if you tell her something ghoulish she'll pay attention to you.
|
|
An evening's entertainment
"Good lord! Are you all right?" She immediately bakes you a batch of scones. She doesn't even comment on the order in which you apply the jam and the cream.
"I know what will cheer you up," she says briskly. "I've been invited to a little soiree by Bunty." She pauses. "An old schoolfriend. I think she's Head of the Deniable Constables now. You'll come with me, won't you? It'll take your mind off things." She considers for a moment. "I must warn you. It's a very particular evening. Old enmities put aside, that sort of thing. It's at Carillon."
|
|
Question your Aunt
What was all that about St Dunstan's? What got her so shaken up at Carillon?
|
|
In Her Majesty's Service
"When I was a gal, I used to do a bit of spying for the Crown. Now, I've been out of the trade for years, but I couldn't help but overhear an intriguing conversation. People rarely pay attention to ladies of my age." She gives you a look, as though daring you to disagree.
"They said Revolutionaries helped our government conquer Albion! They mentioned a secret rendezvous at St Dunstan's, between four representatives: a New Sequencer, a revolutionary, and two members of Her Majesty's Government! I have to get to the bottom of this. It is my duty!" She tilts her chin defiantly. "I've a friend at Port Prosper who owes me a favour. And we can get lunch!"
|
|
Quiz your Aunt
What has she gotten involved in? And what's this with the Christmas card?
|
|
The Calendar Council
"One tick, deary. Just looking for— Aha!" The clink of glass. Your Aunt rises from an open suitcase clutching a dusty bottle of brandy.
"We've got to get to Pan, in Eleutheria. That's where February is. Though she wasn't February when I knew her. She was my opposite number back in— But you want answers. "February's on the Calendar Council. The Revolutionary leadership. The Christmas card'll get us into Winter's Reside." Your Aunt brandishes the bottle. "She has a fondness for brandy. I've been saving this for if I ran into her again. It should get us into her good graces. She'll be able to tell us what went on at St Dunstan's."
|
|
Help your Aunt go through February's papers
The secrets of St Dunstan's Rendezvous are locked behind a nigh impenetrable cipher.
|
|
The Revolution betrayed
Piles of pages are strewn across her cabin. "I've been impersonating February in some correspondence to get more information," your Aunt says in explanation. "It's not like she's going to object."
Working together, you discover the key to the cipher: various calendars – from the Roman to the Revolutionary. From the documents, you learn that February knew that the final design for the bomb was held by Her Majesty's Privy Counsellor. He died and is now interred in the Most Serene Mausoleum. "If we could find those designs, we'd know for certain what our government agreed to," your Aunt says.

An Audience
Your Aunt looks up an ancient, battered etiquette book. "This is from my schooldays," she says with a wistful smile.
Her focus sharpens. "We need to know why London colluded with the Revolutionaries to build this dreadful weapon and then didn't use it. There were four people at the Rendezvous. Two – three now – are dead. There's only one person who can give us the answers we need: Her Renewed Majesty." Your Aunt barrels on. "There's an old protocol we could take advantage of. If we had a Royal Dispensation, we could use the Privilege of an Answer to get an audience. The Sovereign is behoven to answer one question truthfully."

Talk to your Aunt
She's been very quiet since meeting the Queen.

|
Her Majesty's Woman
You catch your Aunt burning papers in the boiler room. "Care for tea?" she asks, leading you to her cabin. She gets out her best service.
"I was relieved to speak to the Queen. Our Sovereign's prescience alone kept us from being in thrall to the Revolutionaries." A lump of sugar settles in her teacup. "It seems the Albion government has been lax! Getting into messes! And worse, shoddiness when attempting to cover them up!" Her eyes gleam behind her spectacles. "I shall have to come out of retirement. Her Majesty needs me. Though – I'll still have time to help you out here, of course." Game note: You can appoint Your Spymaster Aunt to be your Quartermaster when you are docked in port.

The shortest month
Your Aunt is sealing letters into envelopes. "There is work to be done!" she cries, applying a stamp with the force of someone hammering a nail into a fence post.
"I've been thinking about our meeting with Her Majesty. What she said. Our government colluded with the Revolutionaries and has been lying to us all for years! To say nothing of Her Majesty's ambitions." She sighs a deep and weary sigh. "The truth must out. I will continue as February. I shall be tireless against this tyranny." She smiles, ferociously. "And I'll continue to help you out, of course! I am still your Aunt after all." Game note: You can appoint Your Revolutionary Aunt to be your Quartermaster when you are docked in port.

Uninvited
It emerges that your Aunt is holding a tea party for those of your crew plagued with bad dreams. You're not invited. "It's nothing personal, dear. They just won't feel able to speak freely if their captain can hear. They know they can always trust Aunty to keep a secret." She closes the door.
|
|
A Secondment: Listen to Aunty's suggestion
She's been baking up a storm. This usually means she wants something.

|
Possible employment for an Aunt
"Just an idle thought," she says, presenting you with a new batch of sourdough loaves. She frowns at the consistency of the bread, as though she expects it to get its act together sharpish.
"But if you wish to make use of my full arsenal of talents, you might want to grant me shore leave at the Most Serene Mausoleum." Her eyes gleam behind her horn-rimmed spectacles. "I have ideas. But if you think I'm more valuable aboard your engine, that's up to you." Game note: Your Aunt will be able to generate Barrels of Unseasoned Hours for you while seconded at the Most Serene Mausoleum. |
