Meet a grim Penitent
The man is slim and there are circles under his eyes. He shows no energy at all.
|
Through the glass
He lifts his eyes when you seat yourself. It takes time to get him to speak; he finds the effort of conversation very hard going. For the first few exchanges he confines himself to the weather at Carillon. But finally he tells you why he is here. "Too many years I lived on the other side of a mirror," he says. "So long that I forgot everything but that place and its ways, where Is and Is Not change places. I took a companion, and endured his Not-Love. It took me a long time to recognise it for what it was."

Share with the Mirrorbound Penitent a Penance suited for those who cross the wrong borders
He shouldn't have been that side of the mirror to start with.

A world of snakes and mirrors
You've heard a few things about places one should not visit, in the Garden of Insatiable Roses. The Mirrorbound was in one of these.
You give him your penance, suitable for scrubbing away the decision to cross the wrong threshold. He gives you the story of what he saw there, before he forgets. One or two of his stories sound like a prediction of your future, or a memory of your friends. But they can't have been. You don't know anyone with back-jointed elbows and a taste for the meat of an uncooked crow. The other resemblances are surely a coincidence.

Give the Mirrorbound Penitent a little staying power
Endurance and the ability to come through things is necessary, after the experience he's had.

Rather... old?
He considers the Penance dubiously. It does look a bit like a salami wizened behind a bookshelf for a few centuries. Then he overcomes his reticence and consumes it.
He looks better almost right away: energy restored, mood elevated, voice firmer. Where has he been? Someplace that belittled him. Not just a mirror, but a curved mirror, that shows you smaller than you are. But he has come back from there, and now he is ready for a new adventure. He's heard legends of what's out there. He just needs to go and look.
