Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Something isn't right
The knights seem to be fighting not with tourney weapons, but with the same swords they'd use in war. Where is the blood?
Failed event
Impressive
The questers must be deliberately refraining from wounding one another. Amazing, to think that so many knights could wield their deadly weapons with such skill.
Successful event
Clarity
After a moment's consideration you realise there are no swords, no deadly weapons. The questers are a mad, half-starved rabble.
Wade into the mêlée
The questers might not be knights, but they're fanatical and they're wielding an assortment of bizarre weaponry. You could still easily end up concussed.
Failed event

Game note: Failing this will be a setback, but it won't lose you the tournament.

A painful defeat
You charge into the battle and your legs are immediately kicked from under you. The battle rages all around you, trampling boots knocking you back and forth between them. By the time you stagger to your feet you're bruised and more than a little bewildered.

That's when an enormous and musclebound quester lurches through the crowd and almost absent-mindedly swings a fist at your head as he goes past. Fortunately, someone drags you to safety before you come to any further harm.

Perhaps the other events will be play more to your strengths.
Successful event
A hard-won victory
You pick up a plank of wood and charge into the thickest part of the battle, swinging indiscriminately at anyone who gets in your way.

It is not glorious, it is not honourable, and it is certainly not enjoyable. By the end you have a colourful collection of bruises, a cut beneath your eye, and a bump on your head the size of an egg.

But you leave the mêlée having knocked out a dozen other questers and added their Minutes to Midnight to your collection. By any measure, that is a victory.
Wade into the mêlée
The clash and screech of metal! The heat, the roar, the stamping thunder!
Failed event

Game note: Failing this will be a setback, but it won't lose you the tournament.

A decent showing
You crash into the mêlée and fight like a demon, punching and kicking and shoving with the best of them. But luck isn't on your side. You knock out a knight or two, and you avoid any major embarrassment, but before the mêlée's end you are forced to retreat and nurse your colourful collection of bruises.
Successful event
Triumph
You dive into the place where the combat is thickest, your sword flashing. You smash a knight in the face with your mailed fist. You hit someone in the temple with the hilt of your sword and they fall like a bag of rocks. You move through the mêlée like an extremely localised natural disaster, and one that all the other knights find themselves unprepared for. By the mêlée's end, you are one of the only questers left standing. You have a bundle of rightfully-claimed Minutes to Midnight across your back.
Sit out the mêlée
The Tournament has only just begun. There will be plenty of later opportunities to prove your worth.
The end of the tumult
By the mêlée's end, most of the questers are limping, exhausted, and covered in deep purple bruises. Perhaps it was a wise decision to abstain.
