Nightmares is a status affecting your captain in Sunless Skies.

Your current nightmares is shown on a scale of 0-4 underneath the terror bar in the bottom left of the screen. Each time your terror reaches 100% and you manage to stay alive, your condition will increase by one and your terror will reset to 0%. Nightmares may also be gained during terror events, but are often paired with an alternative choice. If your nightmares reach 4 (Consuming), you will still have some time to reduce them but before long a game ending storylet will occur and you will have to start again with a new captain.

The main way to reduce your nightmare is by treating your nightmares at Magdalene's, which requires a Moment of Inspiration. Nightmares can also be reduced by several Facets on levelling up. Only two other encounters within the game reduce your Nightmares: if you had selected the Blind Bruiser with a Mentor facet, then you can speak to them at the Wit & Vinegar Lumber Company (if you are taking part in Smuggling, which has a high Veils and Villainy requirement); and by one choice in a storylet at the Forge of Souls.

As your nightmare becomes worse, terror events will become more frequent and more serious.

Managing Condition[ | ]

The best way to manage your nightmare is to keep your terror low. Docking at the central port in any region will reduce your terror by 30. When your terror reaches 60 or higher, it is a good idea to head toward the central port. Spectacles can reduce your terror by quite a bit. If you find yourself near one, it's a good idea to hang around it and let your terror lessen before moving on. Spectacles only partially reduce your terror and won't reduce it to 0. Many ports have repeatable ways to reduce your terror, often costing money or possessions.

The only way to lower your nightmare is by treating your condition at Magdalene's. The first treatment is free but all subsequent treatments will cost increasing numbers of Moment of Inspiration. There is currently no way to treat your nightmare in Albion or Eleutheria.
