throne_description[]

  • [0]
  • [1] At the castle you are met by a band of fellow knights. They feast you, ply you with wine, generally make you feel welcome.\n\nOnce you are sated, they lead you to an enormous oaken table. Each sits around the table, leaving just one chair empty – a throne of rough basalt.\n\n\"The Blindness Throne,\" says the commander of the knights. \"Only those worthy of the Cup may sit on it and keep their eyesight.\"
  • [2] \"Don't panic,\" says one of the knights. \"The Throne binds all who sit upon it. Just stay calm and let it do its work.\"
  • [3] The candles sputter and extinguish. The knights freeze in place, still as statues. \n\nA pit opens beneath the Blindness Throne and swallows you whole. Demons flock about you in the darkness, warty-skinned gargoyles who inspect you like a prize turkey. \n\nAfter a moment's chatter, one of them unscrews the top of your skull and begins rifling through its contents like a frenzied burglar. \n\n\"We'll take everything from you,\" hisses another of the demons, his hot breath in your ear.
  • [4] As the demons vanish, you find yourself transported back to the Castle of the Seraphim. But all is not well. \n\nThe knights have taken off their friendly faces, revealing warty flesh and sharp teeth. They must be demons themselves, or at least in allegiance with demons. One of them is approaching you, a sizzling-red poker held aloft, ready to put out your eyes and finish the Throne's work.
  • [5] Your iron will has triumphed over foulest sorcery. The grip of the cursed throne has released you. An oppressive weight is lifted. You stand. \n\nThe demon-knights reel back in terror as you draw your black-bladed sword."

waxwork_description[]

  • [0]
  • [1] You take a moment to absorb your surroundings.\n\nThis is not a castle, but an disused and unlit waxwork museum. It's difficult to tell which of the silhouettes in the shadows are wax and which are real. A red-faced Henry VIII looms beside you, covered in a thin film of dust.\n\nThe seat you had thought was the Blindness Throne is actually a dentist's chair. There are straps at the armrests.
  • [2] \"Cut open any purses or pockets you find,\" says the Ringleader. A knife-wielding ruffian nods and steps forward. \"Empty their boots, look behind their ears. We don't want to miss a single coin. This one looks wealthier than the usual lunatics we get.\"
  • [3] The Ringleader watches with keen interest as a knife-wielding ruffian begins to cut open your pockets, slices your purse, even removes and empties your boots. Coins spill across the floor. The waxwork silhouettes of Mary Antoinette and Genghis Khan bear silent witness.
  • [4] The Ringleader snaps his fingers, and one of the robbers approaches you with a blindfold.\n\nFor just a moment, his face becomes a demon's. The rag in his hands becomes a sizzling red poker.\n\nIf the robbers successfully blindfold you and knock you out, you realise, you'll have failed the test of the Blindness Throne. You will be unworthy of the Cup.
  • [5] The robbers still seem unaware that you have slipped your bonds. You only have a few precious seconds to act.
