- [0] The couple in front of you appears to be undergoing a de facto divorce. According to the rest of the queue, they began the wait as newly-weds.
- [1] The couple in front of you appears to be undergoing a de facto divorce. According to the rest of the queue, they began the wait as newly-weds.
- [10] A child stares at you without blinking, delicate tentacles laced with her mother's fingers. After a few minutes, she tugs on her mother's wrist, and the two touch their heads together to whisper, their voices like the hiss of the surf.
- [20] A society woman gasps. Several in the crowd turn; it is nothing, merely an exciting passage in the novel she is reading. She seems to be among the few prepared for the wait.
- [30] A set of middle-aged, tow-headed quadruplets erupt into an exquisite acapella performance. Unfortunately, their singing soon grows bawdy and then uncomfortably, if reverently, preoccupied with a nameless thing asleep in the stars.
- [40] Someone brought their dogs to the port: seven solemn dalmatians of impeccable character and gorgeous bearing, each and every one of them adorned with tiny bowler hats. One looks to you and shakes its head, inexplicably disapproving of what it sees.
- [50] An elderly gentleman stands behind you. Every couple of minutes he clears his throat with a 'harumph'. The woman just in front of you turns, and whispers to you: \"If he does that one more time, I'll strangle him, you see if I don't.\" ... \"Harumph.\"
- [60] The portly man standing just ahead of you is sweating prodigiously. In vain, he mops at his pink skin, around the wattle of fat that collars his chin. After a while, his facial structure sharpens. Is he actually melting?
- [70] A man in an exquisite three-piece suit and a lithe, moon-faced woman in black stand together, holding hands. Despite their refined attire, there's something feral in the symmetry of their behaviour, their hungry regard.
- [80] \"I don't care if you think it's monstrous of me,\" grumbles the schoolteacher, trembling as she smokes her cigar. \"But I'd rather shoot myself than have kids of my own.\" Unsupervised, her pack of prepubescent students rampage through the queue, barking inane questions.
- [90] Two women, one withered, the other of indeterminate age, bicker quietly. \"Tell her she needs to repent,\" demands the older one. \"Her immortal soul is at stake.\" Her adversary rolls her eyes and shrugs at you, teeth razored. The look that she flashes says it all, really.
