Story description[]

Your supplies are gone. But perhaps – if you are desperate enough – you can find something in your hold to stave off starvation. Game note: None of these options are appetising. Most are perilous. But they are better than starving.

Trigger conditions[]

Area: Limbo
Frequency: Always (100%)

Interactions[]

Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Attempt to eat your Uncanny Specimens
Hopefully a nugget of nutrition can be salvaged from them.
Failed event

Advanced query needs investigation Advanced alteration value probably needs examination.

A grisly meal
The flesh is rubbery and vile, but beneath you find small, livery organs. Their taste is pungent, but they keep the wolf at bay for a while. Alas, one of your crew has a fatal reaction. That night, they are seized by convulsions, and choke. There was nothing you could have done.
Successful event
Desperate enough
Beneath the putrefied, spongy, inedible flesh you find pungent organs. After boiling them mercilessly, you share them out. Your crew, retching, force them down – better this than starvation.
Divide up your Uncanny Specimens as best you can
Hopefully a nugget of nutrition can be salvaged from them.
Failed event

Special is calculated as follows: -2+(Crew-Uncanny Specimen) * 1.67

Advanced alteration value probably needs examination.

Insufficient
The flesh is rubbery and vile, but underneath you find small, livery organs. Some have putrefied, and there are not enough to go around. A mouthful each; not enough to keep some of your crew from succumbing to starvation.
Successful event
Meagre mouthfuls
Beneath the putrefied, spongy, inedible flesh are pungent organs. After boiling them mercilessly, you share them out in disciplined portions. Your crew, retching, force them down – better this than starvation.
Make a porridge from Verdant Seeds
An exhausting and dangerous task. Their kernels are tough as flint, and sometimes the seeds sprout in your stomach.
Failed event

Advanced query needs investigation Advanced alteration value probably needs examination.

Green fingers
The porridge is doled out in soggy spoonfuls. It smells, and tastes, of compost. Your crew force it down. The next day, one of them groans and writhes, clutching their gut. Within hours they are dead, their intestines clogged with flora; frondules uncoiling from their mouth and nose.
Successful event
The wolf at bay
The key is to hammer the seeds into flakes. The resulting porridge tastes of mulch. It delivers little nutrition during its alacritous passage through the digestive system, but at least delays starvation for a time.
Eke out a gruel made from Verdant Seeds
An exhausting and dangerous task. Their kernels are tough as flint, and sometimes the seeds sprout in your stomach.
Failed event

Special is calculated as follows: -1+(((Crew/4)-Sack of Verdant Seeds)*2) * 1.67

Advanced alteration value probably needs examination.

Insufficient
Too little gruel; too many mouths. Within the day, starvation has claimed more of your crew.
Successful event
Meagre mouthfuls
The key is to hammer the seeds into flakes. The resulting gruel tastes of mulch after a storm. It delivers little nutrition during its alacritous passage through the digestive system, but at least delays starvation for a time.

Attempt to eat a Condemned Experiment
Is this to be the miserable end to its ruined existence? The cleaver and the pot?
Failed event
A meagre conclusion
The cleaver separates the knobbled joints. Nothing is wasted: fat and gristle, flesh and skin all go into the pot. The resulting broth is astringent and chalky. Your crew dine silently.
Successful event
Fruit from the Garden
The bones bubble in the pot. A smell like cloves rolls from the galley. The crew smack their lips. There is enough to go around. And the flesh – the flesh is sweet as cinnamon; achingly, unforgivably delicious! The crew fall upon it like wolves, gnawing at the knuckles and sucking the marrow from the stripped-clean bones.
Butcher and eat some Caged Catches
They have fallen silent in their cages. Perhaps they know what's coming.
The wolf at bay
For safety, you shoot the things dead in their cages before dragging the corpses out. Then you butcher and boil them. The meat is rubbery and laced with sharp, delicate bones. The crew chew, and chew, and chew.

Butcher and eke out your last Caged Catches
They have fallen silent in their cages. Perhaps they know what's coming.
Failed event

Special is calculated as follows: -2+(((Crew/7)-Caged Catch)*3) * 1.67

Advanced alteration value probably needs examination.

Insufficient
Alas, the creatures are largely inedible. Their flesh is gritty, and causes the mouth to blister. Your crew force as much of the meat down as they can. For those who can't, starvation comes in the night.
Successful event
The wolf at bay
For safety, you shoot the things dead in their cages before dragging them out. Then you butcher and boil them. The meat is rubbery and laced with sharp, delicate bones that claw at your innards if they aren't picked out. The crew chew, bleakly.
Butcher and eat a Caged Catch
It has fallen silent in its cage. Perhaps it knows what's coming.
The wolf at bay
For safety, you shoot the thing three times before dragging it from the cage. The you butcher and boil it. The meat is rubbery and laced with sharp, delicate bones that claw at your innards if they aren't picked out. The crew chew, bleakly.
Devour an Unidentifiable Squirming Thing
You caught it in the mists near Worlebury. Now, it thrashes weakly in its net.
The wolf at bay
The flesh is mealy and tastes like chalk, but the crew are hungry enough not to care. Its not a meal, but it will stave starvation off for a while.
Eat your dog
Its brown eyes look at you as you approach, unable to even conceive your grim intention. Its tail thumps, feebly, on the floor.
The deed, done
A wordless meal. The engine is emptier, now.
Eat your cat
It is curled beside the stove, a scrawny, sleeping thing.
    • Useless Cat ≥ 1 [The Useless Cat is aboard your engine.]

The deed, done
The poor cat furnishes you with a pitiful meal. He was not, it turns out, entirely useless.
Eat your pangolin
Perfection doesn't matter anymore. Hunger is all you know.
The deed, done
You make her end quick. She furnishes the crew with a salty soup, which you eat gravely.
Eat your rabbit
Somehow, he is still sleek and plump. The crew eye him like wolves.
The deed, done
This was, you suppose, inevitable. Forks clink on plates. Out of respect, the crew try to suppress their sighs of satisfaction.
Eat Dilly
If Dilly can, in fact, be eaten.
    • Dilly ≥ 1 [You have Dilly!]

The deed, done
Catching her is a fraught, frantic process. But eventually she goes like a lobster into the broiling waters of the pot. How she squeals. Her meat is fishy and flaky; it will sustain you a little while.
Offer them nothing
Perhaps you have nothing to offer, or perhaps you are not willing to descend to the depths of your desperation just yet.

Game note: Be warned: a number of your crew will starve, your Terror will drastically increase, and your Desperation will soar.

Starvation
If the crew were stronger, perhaps they would mutiny, but they are wracked with hunger pangs. Over the course of the next day, several succumb to starvation, while the others grown ever-more frantic and wild-eyed.
Advanced alteration value probably needs examination.
