Rationing is a Sunless Skies Random Event.
Story description[]
Your supplies are low, so the Studious Forged Companion has devised a ingenious rationing system that will provide adequate nutrition for your entire crew. Unfortunately, the instructions are too complicated for your ravenous crew to follow, and use units of measurement no one besides the Companion has heard of.
Baffled, the crew accuse you of trying to trick them into eating less than their fair share.

Chastened by your grisly tales of long-dead stokers who didn't do what their captain told them, your crew sit meekly around the galley table as the Companion measures out their portions. Once the meal is over, you examine the remaining supplies, and indeed the Companion has managed to stretch them beyond what seemed possible hours ago.
Nevertheless, an air of unease persists amongst the crew.

It is not as if you can understand the Companion's methods any better than the crew can.

Your supplies are depleted
Vindicated, the crew fall upon your remaining supplies. Within minutes they have stuffed themselves, and lie groaning next to an empty crate. "Don't try to use that monster to confuse us again," says one of them, through a belch.
