Examine the captain's logs
They may shed light on what befell the Explorer.

Things best forgot
The smell of turpentine hangs in the air. Fresh paint drips from the ceiling, as does a stoker, suspended with ropes. The bedsheets have been painted with amateurish portraits of the dead stoker. In the first few, he is alive. In the later ones, he is not.

Always defeated
The captain's door is covered in noughts and crosses. So, it transpires, is the rest of his cabin, his logs, and his body. In every game, the noughts won. Your search turns up a few valuables, and you return to your engine.
| ||||
Search for survivors
Perhaps one did not succumb to the star-madness.

A corpse-cargo
Most of the locomotive's windows are broken. A star-wind whistles through them. You find only corpses in the locomotive: killed in the battle, or barricaded in their cabins, or – in one case – stuffed into a cupboard.

A living soul
You explore corridors whose walls and ceilings are daubed with unfamiliar constellations. At last, you find a cabin barricaded from within. It holds a crewman who seems lucid. He begs to join your crew.
Your own crew aren't sure. What if the star-madness seizes him?
|
Yes
You could do with an experienced hand.
|
The crewman is grateful. He works with a feverish intensity: eagerness to please, or the first signs of the obsession provoked by a surfeit of starlight? Your crew take no chances. Someone watches the newcomer at all times.
| ||
No
You'll drop him off at the next port. In the meantime, he'll be confined to quarters.
|
He looks disappointed, but agrees. The crew are happier with him locked away, and are cheered by being able to perform this act of (sensibly cautious) charity.

Scavenge for parts
The Explorer is beyond repair, as are its crew. But perhaps something might be salvageable.
|
A messy business
You exhort your crew to get over their d__n superstitions and start stripping the Explorer. They begin dutifully and gingerly, but soon begin to treat the Explorer as the icon of all that they fear: star-madness, the thunder of guns, a wild death in the empty sky. They rip out plating and spare parts with frenzied glee.
