Log Entries[ | ]

A heady pollen-scent permeates the bridge, fierce as blooming lilies.
The sky-winds are calmer, here. Lazy breezes, prickled with pollen.
You hear a distant drone. A crewman grimaces. "Chorister-bees," he mutters.

A buzzing sound in the air. The Repentant Devil is restless. "Titania always called them."
Chorister Bee carcasses float outside. "Weapons ready," orders Cinders. "We're near Titania."
Chorister Bee carcasses strike the hull. The Fatalistic Signalman sighs: "Titania."
The Clay Conductor is enraptured. "Listen, Captain – the bees! What sweet music!"
The Driver points at Titania. "Flower of the Reach. Father wanted to move here. But bees happened."
The Eccentric stares, entranced, at the delicate lights of Titania.
The Incognito Princess's eyes gleam. "Titania is like a brooch. I want it."
The Inconvenient Aunt peers from a porthole. "Titania is such an odd place. A little garish for my tastes."
Today, your crew rescued the useless cat from a cannon, an endeavour complicated by an excess of biting.
"If I could shrink her, I'd put Titania on display behind glass," says the Chiropterous Hoarder, voice rasping and hungry."

Valentine Square[ | ]

Titania is cupped in the petals of a colossal orchid. Heady with scent, lurid with colour. An enclave of Bohemians have made it their home, seeking inspiration in the wildness of the Reach.

Look for the magician
The Fortunate Navigator wants to see a tiger, and needs a magician to do so. If she isn't afraid of bees, Miss Peppercorn – the travelling magician – might be here.
Gone
You are directed to the mayor, who is dismayed to disappoint you. "Peppercorn always seems to rush off the moment she's done here. Perhaps it's the pollen?" She walks around the Fortunate Navigator and frowns at the body on his back. "Is that an art piece?"

Still, you've narrowed down the list.

Game note: Each time you fail to find the magician, you increase your chance of finding them at the next location.

What is Titania? A question with no easy answer. To the poets, a place of inspiration. To the stone workers, an untouched slab. To the playwrights, a blank page. Deliver your musician from the Blue Kingdom Embassy
It's her stop.
The musician disembarks
She makes her way to the nearest public place. She sings about the coming of the end, the closing of the book, the full stop and the silence that follows. By the time she has finished her song, a rapt crowd has gathered. Some of the Titanians are in tears. She launches into another.
Commission a statue that depicts an ending
"Any ending will do," the Orator told you.
A finished sculpture
There are two types of ending. Something can end because it is completed. Or something can end because it is destroyed.

After much conversation and debate with your sculptors, you decide to commission a statue of a book. The right side of the book is open to its final page; the left side is devoured by flames.

You can finish a book by reading to its end, you see, or you can finish a book by setting it on fire.

When the sculpture is finished, it stands in Titania's main square as a permanent testament to the dual Philosophy of the Blue Kingdom.

Somewhere amidst the garrets and galleries of Titania hide the Midnight Rose. They make red honey, an old London vice. The manner of its creation is a secret, but is rumoured to require a breed of rose first grown in hell, bees, and memories harvested from caged subjects. Imbibing red honey allows you to live those memories; to ransack the contents of another's heart.

The Midnight Rose[ | ]

The Midnight Rose are a close-knit coterie that produce precise vintages of red honey. If you want to taste the bleak memories of an orphan, or the excesses of a reckless libertine, they are able to provide. Their leader is an Ethereal Apiarist, whose laced gowns are stained at the hem with grass and soil. Bees crawl, lazily, in her wild hair.

Interactions

Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Hand over an Unlicensed Chart
There are paths through the clogging undergrowth of the Reach that even this once-smuggler turned Revenue Man won't know.
Secret ways
You and the Apiarist spend a coffee-fuelled night combing your chart, plotting new, hidden routes for their couriers to use. The way will be dangerous. You have had to favour circuitous, little-used paths plagued by the Candlewind. But a dreadnought would never be able to traverse them. The Ethereal Apiarist is pleased. The Gloomy Middleman probably won't be, but he might be slightly less miserable. You'd better deliver the good news to him.
Siphon some funds towards creating a front for their contraband
Official activities at Titania could provide plausible cover for smuggling honey.
Under their noses
Libraries need books, and books can be hollowed out. Salons need wine, which comes in barrels in which you can conceal jars. Museums need visitors, and visitors have pockets and bags. You ensure that your current project in Titania will have an agreement with the Midnight Rose. Soon, they'll be able to slip their contraband right past this canny new captain. The Ethereal Apiarist is pleased. The Gloomy Middleman probably won't be, but he might be slightly less miserable. You'd better deliver the good news to him.

Game note: You must be at least 50% of the way towards funding a project at Titania to do this.

Accompany her as she works in the glass house
She is disarmingly frank. The Red Honey trade seems to be something of an open secret in Titania; the other side of the port's coin.
The honey-harvest
Rosebushes heap against the glass and climb in thorny tangles through the greenhouse. Among them are tall cages, each occupied by a prisoner. Bees buzz into and out of their ears, and sip from the corners of their eyes. The prisoners cry out, and sob, and plead. "Look closer," the Apiarist says. Around each of their necks hangs a key on a chain. "They can free themselves at any time, but choose not to. They are artists, you see. They believe they must suffer if they are to one day make great art."
That's bollocks isn't it?
Art no more relies on misery than plumbing relies on ennui.
She has the dignity to look awkward. "Yes, well. They are romantics. Perhaps telling themselves this lie will give them the confidence to make something remarkable. Think of it as a placebo: the medicine was only water and sugar, but the patient still recovered."
Say nothing
Keep your thoughts to yourself.
You finish your tour, watching the bees hurry from cage, to rose, to the hives that stand at one end of the glass house, red as berries.
Compliment her appalling ingenuity
She has, after all, managed to convince her victims that they are customers.
Her face makes no expression. "We are democratising art," she says, loftily. "Thanks to our cage-garden, a writer need not speculate about the sorrow of a lover as their beloved dies; they can taste our honey and know it themselves. We are no longer subject to the tyranny of experience."
Ask why the export of honey to London has slowed
The Apiarist sighs.
A problem
"The Revenue Men," she says, darkly. "They've appointed a new captain to patrol the skies nearby. He used to be one of the Gentlemen, the smugglers who operate out of Pan, and he knows a lot of the tricks." Inconvenient. You'll need to find a way to circumvent this canny captain.

Encourage a visitor to invest in Titania
A few brave art-lovers from Albion are wandering the exhibits.

Request a boon of Titania
For safety, civilians are not normally allowed to use the telescope, but you are owed a boon.
The wonder of the heavens
Your guide gives you a detailed tour of the High Wilderness from a whole new perspective. Wherever you shift the telescope, they have an earnest rumour that emerged from the colony/settlement/something there. Some of them may even be true.

The engineer looks shamefaced, as near as you can tell under the thick layer of fresh soot. "Look, I was almost sure it would work," she says. "Here. Maybe they'll be able to do something with the pieces at the Society proper..."

Far from being a demonstration of the High Wilderness' potential, the Exhibition is quickly revealed as little but a display of Albion arrogance. "I hear we have you to thank," whispers a figure in black. He squints. "Someone who looked a bit like you, anyway. Either way. Here. For your service."

The Rhapsodic Mayor keeps changing her mind.
Endless choices
The Mayor looks up from a pile of designs. "Everyone has their own idea what our museum should be about. I want to use— hmm. Can I use all of them? No, bad idea. Need to choose one. But which? They all look so... educational."
Advocate for an Imperial Museum
A symbol of British greatness, before and after Albion.
"You don't think that might be a bit... colonial?" The Rhapsodic Mayor considers it. "Then again, we are already a colony, I suppose. Very well. Let it be done!"
Advocate for an Art Museum
A place of beauty in all its myriad forms.
The Rhapsodic Mayor closes her eyes to better visualise it. "Of course! What better way to celebrate our achievements? We will begin work immediately."
Advocate for a Great Library
A new Alexandria, home to all knowledge.
The Rhapsodic Mayor nods. "You read my mind. A place where knowledge can be free to all. To most," she corrects herself. "To those who can appreciate it."
Leave the Mayor to her thoughts
She is unlikely to decide any time soon.

There must be some interesting secrets in the depths that the public is not normally allowed into.
The Enduring Empire
So much fascinating history – some of it perhaps even accurate. You spend a good afternoon browsing through the exhibits, including the darker vaults that the public doesn't get to see. How curious – the logs of the engine Lamorak, long thought lost during an ambassadorial trip to the Blue Kingdom. These warrant exploration.

The books here must hold many secrets. You could learn a few things.
Deep in a world of words
Your selection of prohibited books does not go unnoticed by the only other patron in the library's private wing. They quietly sit down across the table from you and slide something to you. A calling card, blank except for a street name in New Winchester. An unspoken nod of recognition from the shadows.

Game note: Every Captain can request a boon. This will give you a Cryptic Benefactor.

Present the Seal of Mr Barleycorn to the Curator
It often pays to be thorough.
Accursed terminology
The Curator, being a human man with a thin moustache, as opposed to a cloaked, winged monster – stares blankly at the lump of wax in your hand. "I do not understand," he says. "And things that I do not understand, I rarely approve of. Kindly take that from my sight."

A place to relax, when creativity isn't following.
"Good, good." The Melancholy Poet seems to care little for the decision, as long as it stays made. "Do that. Hurry up. Before anyone complains."

Nobody can agree on a suitable theme.
A war of three schools
The Melancholy Poet is surrounded by three representatives of Albion's great poetry schools – the Nocturnals, the Mycologene and the Bazaarine. All feel that their chosen style should have priority at this glorious new poetry academy.
Advocate for the Nocturnal School
A collection of radicals, embracing the freedom that only the dark can provide.
The Melancholy Poet murmurs agreement. Building begins. Soon after, the Nocturnals have a new home.
Advocate for the Mycological School
The newest of the great schools, inspired by the secret poetry of blemmigans and the sensual allure of fungus.
The Melancholy Poet murmurs agreement. Building begins. Soon after, the Mycologenes have a new home.
Advocate for the Bazaarine School
A poetry laced with nostalgia for the old days, when the sky was rock, the snow burned with sorrow, and the night echoed with the beating of leather wings.

A fungal maze

The aroma of the mushrooms and their mulch has drawn in more aggressive creatures. Most are quickly caught, caged and deep-fried, but the poets are happy to let you have a couple of the more unpalatable catches, so long as you promise never to bring them back.

Advocate for a Water Garden
She has the right idea. Why try to improve on perfection?
The Rhapsodic Mayor smiles. "Exactly what I was thinking. Of course, with a few minor changes..."
Advocate for the House of Cavy
There are rumours of a lost tribe from the Underzee seeking a home. Titania could be the perfect choice.
"Titania welcomes all," says the Rhapsodic Mayor, whispering to an aide to put the word out in hopes of reaching this illusive House It isn't long before a small, eccentrically built locomotive pulls into port. The doors open and out patters an imperious looking guinea pig flanked by a pair of pike-wielding guard rodents. It chirps something that sounds like "It'll do, I suppose," and leads a long procession down to the Petal. The Cavies are ready to establish their new colony.
Advocate for a Farm
Titania could become more self-reliant and a little hard work never killed anyone.

Silence in the space of half an hour
Plainsong drowns the lamentation, and the fury and the mind. All the world joins Death's hymnal: those who proudly defy their fate, and those who beg for wretched mercy; those who raise their arms, those who buckle their knees. The Chorister Hive takes the lyrics of poets yet unwritten; the unsung songs from lips now forever silent. It is only iron and fire that quietens the voice of carnage. But lo, the song ends only by its own accord: once the nectar is gathered, the Hive departs. And there is a lasting silence.
