Story description[ | ]

Tensions are high, and the crew are making mistakes.

The preternaturally fertile seeds of the Reach must be stored with the utmost care. A flicker of light, a lap of moisture – and they burst into violent growth.

Like the sack in your hold, from which questing vines have groped, knotting around your cargo.

Interactions[ | ]

Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Remove the sprouting sack to the galley
You won't save the seeds, but you may increase your supplies.
Food for the pot
You separate the sack from the rest of your cargo before it can do any damage. The seeds are beyond rescue, but the vines that unfurl from them are already budding. Their fruit are moderately distressing (they are pale, and bulbous, and palpitate unexpectedly), but edible.
Try to salvage the sack of seeds
Order your crew to cut away the growths and salvage as many of the seeds as they can.
Failed event
A bristle of thorns
The crew hack away the growth, and manage to save most of the seeds But a signaller cries out – one vine hid venomed thorns. Fiery welts have erupted on his skin. His condition worsens overnight. He is unlikely to recover.
Successful event
Like friendly snakes
The crew advance with secateurs. Vines coil pleadingly about their wrists, but to no avail. Eventually every frond-like root is located and removed. The sack is saved, although the crew have had enough of gardening.
Throw away any sacks that show signs of quickening
Take no chances – cast them into the sky. Your crew would prefer this.
A thorough job
You gather any sack whose seeds show the slightest hint of green or any quiver of life, and spill them into the sky. Your crew are glad to see them go. One tells a story of a captain who acted too slowly, whose locomotive was choked with ferns.
Advanced alteration value probably needs examination.
