The Avid Horizon is a Sunless Skies Story Event.
Story description[]
Two vast, winged statues guard the Avid Horizon, the door through which Londoners passed from the Neath into the Wilderness. It does not open.
A wooden mooring post has been hammered into the ice before the Watchers. It is a gesture towards a tradition from before the Wilderness, from a sunless sea, when the condemned could beg for forgiveness on the most distant shore.

Ambition: Establish a base at the foot of the Gate
"I'll stay at the base and get things underway, while you gather anything else we'll need," the Friend(ID2) suggests.

|
Base camp
It takes several trips to row your supplies and materials over. The Friend(ID2) establishes a small camp between the clawed toes of one of the great cloaked statues that flank the gate.
"At least the Fire that Follows should find it more difficult to reach me here, surrounded by a sea," she says, hopefully. You tell her to be careful regardless.

Ambition: visit your base at the Gate
The Friend(ID2) is working there on an unhappy mix of ritual, invention and machinery that you hope will open the gate back to the Neath, where the suns can't find you.

Explore the Horizon's threshold
What might you find on this bleak waste?
|
Hell frozen over
This was only ever a place to pass through, never a destination. Bitter cold rimes every surface. A merciless wind passes without effort through even your sky-suit, your flesh, your lungs. You will not stay here long.

Give him supplies to help him outlast the cold
The man must be waiting for the Gentlemen. Perhaps he has a story to tell.
|
|
A new family
Every so often, the Gentlemen visit the Avid Horizon in their black engines. They collect those whose confessions they've accepted, and take them back to Pan.
As you place the crate down, the man presses close and beckons you down to his level. He spits out his crime – perhaps as payment, perhaps he needed to say it out loud – or perhaps he just wanted to burden another. His voice is as hoarse as murder.

Read the fresh confessions
Who has been to beg the Gentlemen's aid?
|
|
A last recourse
The post provides a list of murderers, traitors and villains. To earn the trust of the Gentlemen, the confessions must convince as testaments of absolute truth. Some confessions are obscured by elaborate excuses and abject apologies. But none spare the reader – every detail is recorded, as vivid as if it had occurred yesterday. This post is crammed with a catalogue of depravity.

Check the pillar for confessions
What lies beneath its frozen coat?
|
Old and distant crimes
You pick scraps of paper from the post, a fragmentary catalogue of sin. Each describes a crime, a betrayal – but nothing new to you. The London press has already chewed through these events with relish. The brutalities make for grim reading all the same. But one remorse-filled confession of murder swears it'll never hurt a person again. Perhaps that is, in some way, a comfort.

Leave
You are free to leave. Only those without such a choice remain.
Game note: If you leave, you will have to wait before something else might be available. |
A swift boarding
Your hands are numb with cold; a stoker has to open your engine's door to let you inside. It's some while before it's warm enough to walk the engine without a coat.

A swift boarding
Your hands are numb with cold; a stoker has to open your engine's door to let you inside. It is slammed shut behind you – but the chill has followed you in. It's some while before it's warm enough to walk the engine without a coat.
