[70] The well's tumult makes the bathysphere swing and spin. It is a rocky, nauseous descent. Soon, the last light of the stars falters, and the windows are dark. But there is movement in that dark, like ink stirred into water.\n
[72] According to the bathysphere's clocks, you descend for more than a day. Then the winds begin to ease. The sphere stops spinning and swaying. There is an eery calm, then a sudden, grinding collision. Then silence.\n\n\"I think we've hit the bottom,\" the Baroness says. Her voice is bleak.
[74] You stand amidst the gold bones of a sun. They vault and arch like a murdered cathedral, ribs as big as bridges, a curve of skull vast enough to dome all of London.\n\nYou scramble like ants beneath them, discovering that their lengths are twisted and splintered, mangled by some impossible force.\n\nThere is a pressure in your ears, as if unheard thunder was resounding around you.
