The Burrower's Breath is a Sunless Skies Random Event.

Story description[]

Ochre fogs rise about your locomotive. The air acquires a caustic copper tang. Your driver complains they can't see a damn thing. "The Burrower's Breath!" they murmur.

The fog persists all day. That evening, a gnarled crewman visits your cabin. The Burrower Below is displeased, he informs you. She expects a sacrifice. If you wish it, he will arrange it.

Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Decline. Try to find your own way through.
Drive blindly through the fog. It will be dangerous.
Failed event
A winding path
You take the helm. It is a risky course. Sudden ruins loom out of the fog, requiring frantic changes of course. Your hull grinds, deafening, against ancient stone as you squeeze past. Twice, you find the way too clogged with obstacles to traverse safely, and must turn back in search of other routes. By the time you find your way to clear skies, your supplies are depleted and morale is low.
Successful event
A careful path
You take the helm and order half steam. Your engine crawls forward, vast shapes looming around you like giants in the fog. Sky-rocks? Ancient ruins? Slumbering leviathans? You steer a precarious course between them. After an hour, the air clears. The fogs part like a music-hall curtain, and the stage of the sky is revealed ahead. You are free, for now.
Rely on an old chart
You have in your possession a chart that might allow you to navigate this stretch of sky despite the strangling fog.

Game note: You risk losing an Unlicensed Chart.

Failed event
Trusting to chance
You unroll the chart and steer by it, crawling your blind locomotive through the fog. A jagged ruin looms abruptly before you. Your driver heaves on the brake. A narrow miss. The chart was not a reliable as you had hoped. Was it wrong? Outdated? False? Have you been trusting in nothing but blind luck this whole time? In disgust, you tear the map to pieces, making sure it can't lead you astray again.
Successful event
Inch by inch
Your navigator hunches over the illicit chart, feeding curt instructions to your driver. Their course is true; the chart is reliable. Eventually your engine crawls from the fog – which has already begun to discolour your hull, turning its rivets the colour of a smoker's moustache. You roll the life-saving chart carefully, and return it to your cabin. You may need it again, one day.
Permit the sacrifice
The Burrower's price is the time remaining to three of your crew.

Game note: This might remove the Burrower's Wrath.

Failed event
Insufficient
That night, the gnarled crewman (who is soft of tread) marks three of your crew while they sleep, daubing a sooty sigil on each of their foreheads.

Over the next several days first one, then another, then the last of the marked men die. An accident in the engine room. A sudden fever. A tragic slip while repairing damage to outside of the hull.

But it is not enough. The ochre fog comes and go as it pleases. Your crew develop hollow, hacking coughs.
Successful event
Satisfied
The next morning, three of your crew awake to find marks daubed in coal-dust on their foreheads. How curious. Over the next week all three of them die. Not from violence or murder, but to accidents. To illness. To misfortune. As if the threads of their lives had been cut short. The ochre fog sinks away, and troubles you no more.
