The House of Days is a platform in the Blue Kingdom, located slightly west from Sky Barnet.

Guide[ | ]

Captains must be non-Invisible to enter the first time, but can later enter with any status.

In The Court of Apes, Antedeceased captains can gain a Testament of the Feather costing 1 Cryptic Benefactor and a difficult veils challenge.

Visiting the Pansekritis costs 2 Testament of the Feather with a litigator, and studying them with a very difficult mirrors challenge can earn you 1 Searing Enigma.

Annoying the Pansekritis changes your status from Any to Invisible.

In The Court of Oaks, Yoked captains can change their status to Ephemera.  This costs 1 Unseasoned Hours, 1 Testament of Salt and 2 Navaratine Gemstones.

In the Court of Mayflies, Antedeceased captains can change their status to Ephemera.  This requires a litigator.

Log Entries[ | ]

Here, the dead can plead their case, in hopes of altering their status.
This is the House of Days, where the Pansekritis may be petitioned.

The House of Days[ | ]

The House is lit from nowhere in the colour of dawn. It has no windows anywhere in its great facade, only colonnades and stone. It gives the impression of having been extended again and again, portions of the building at different heights with different roofs.

The Porch of the House of Days[ | ]

The House of Days is a palace so large that it is hard to see both ends of the facade. The staircase up is many stories tall and ballrooms wide.
There is only one door. Spirits go in briskly, but those who come out are slower, not always sure where to go next.
A masked Rubbery spirit sits on the steps, holding an application tablet smeared in yellowish fluid: Application Denied, No Right of Appeal.

Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Attempt the doorway
The door is guarded by two wheels of light, living and resplendent. They are not quite too bright to look at.
Unwelcome!
One of the Wheels circles you. You have no shadow, illuminated like this. The fact strikes you as obscurely shameful.

"You are Invisible," says the Wheel, though the language it uses is a single word, which is its own name, and which you comprehend without translation. "You must present yourself to the proper authorities and be given a Status in the Blue Kingdom."

A masked chimpanzee passes you, snickering. It has been marked with a seal that declares it Ephemera.

Game note: Speak with the Secretary at the Embassy of Albion in the Toll-Tower to learn how you may change your status.

Attempt the doorway
You have the Status to enter, but you have not been to the House of Days before, and there are rituals to perform.
Acknowledged
You must be clean in purpose and in body, and to this end, you are washed with vinegar and scrubbed with salt. Then you are given three poems in honour of the Sapphir'd King, which you must read aloud, in chorus with the others entering the House just now.

"Not as bad as my Litigator made me think," remarks a cheerful shade beside you. But that is before the Ceremony of Inhalation. You are tested with the odour of the rotting dead, and you only just escape being most improperly ill.

After all this, the attendants direct you towards the Court of Apes.
Return within
You have been to the House of Days once before, and may reenter now.
Lurk near the Entrance
Perhaps someone will tell you what lies inside.
Rumours gathered
Once upon a time, the House of Days was only one court, with the Pansekritis inside. They built new Courts each time a new need was found.

Now, several floors of the House of Days are too low-ceilinged for a human to enter, and others are scaled for giants. Two sections of the House are underwater, and one burns without respite, catering to the spirits of those born in volcanoes.

These surface differences do not signify. Every court is essentially alike: a place to wait, a place to fill forms, a collection of weighing and measuring devices, a window with a secretary.

Mingle in the crowds approaching the staircase
There are creatures and spirits without number.

The Antechamber of the Pansekritis[ | ]

One may see the Pansekritis at any time. He appears as a sigil of flame at the heart of the House of Days. The same sigil is reflected in the polished stone. It is written at the head of the page, every page, in every appointment book of the House. It is spoken as greeting and parting by the servants of the House. To be noticed by the Pansekritis, however, requires effort and prior arrangement.

Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Return to the Presence of the Pansekritis
Now that you have been once, it is easier to claim a second visit.
Familiar scents
Your liver is removed, its place is packed with herbs and white linen and an astringent powder. The jackal in attendance nods as it does its work. You do not flinch, which makes the operation faster. Now it is over, and you are free to enter.
Listen to rumours about the Pansekritis
Each time you hear the name, it conveys new meanings to you.
Echo on echo
The Pansekritis is a Logos, a word that was spoken by the Westernmost King, and has echoed ever since. Depending on your translator, the Pansekritis’ meaning may be rendered as any of these phrases:

Eternal dominion

Everything in its place

No drop-in meetings permitted

The sigil is painted in nectar on the ceiling of the Court of Hummingbirds for the better understanding of the winged spirits; in the Court of Whales, it is expressed in bass song; in the Court of Bloodhounds, it is translated – almost accurately – as a scent of vetiver and sandalwood.
Claim your right to an audience
This will bring you before the Pansekritis, following the established protocols. Your liver will be required as a deposit. You will get it back later.
Others have vouched for you
Place the Testaments of the Feather here, on the back of a heron. Then, expose your belly to the nails of a masked jackal.

The wound is not fatal while you are in the House of Days. But you are committed now. Fail to come back this way and you will be, for a brief time, very sorry.

The jackal packs the vacancy with linen and bitter herbs. Your liver goes into a jar which is stamped with your name in the House of Days, and the jar stored on a shelf with twelve of thirteen other jars of various sizes. Several are very dusty.
Have your Litigator argue your right to enter
Your Litigator can help you gain access to the Pansekritis at a reduced cost, and with your liver.
Others have vouched for you
Walk boldly into the Presence
This is dangerous. It avoids certain liturgies and rituals. Following protocols would be safer.

Game note: Failing here will strip you of your Status in the Blue Kingdom.

Failed event
Cast out
Some courts rely on guards. The Pansekritis needs none. You have not been granted an audience. Therefore, you have no place claiming the attention of the Pansekritis. When you receive it anyway, for a fraction of an instant, you see yourself as the Pansekritis sees you:

Impertinent. Intruding. Insignificant. It has concerns you cannot imagine. Business like yours is for the servants of servants.

Then your presence, your highly unsuitable presence, is... negated. You are slapped backwards, outside the House, status stripped away, Invisible again. The experience doesn't physically harm you, but you cannot forget the sight of your own smallness.

Game note: You are once more Invisible to those of the Blue Kingdom.

Successful event
Between the glance of one guard and the next
You go with courage. It is the only way. Admit doubt that you belong, and you will not belong.

The Presence of the Pansekritis[ | ]

The Pansekritis is a wall of flame and wind and noise. So strong is the light that your body is transparent. Even the shadow of your bones is only a faint pattern on the ashen floor. The Pansekritis perceives you. Each hair on your head is counted, every scar. It does not have time for delays. What do you wish? What would you convert from Should to Is?

A Rental Dispute: Keep the Ambassador where she is, untroubled by Devils
Her work is not complete.

Game note: You can only do one thing here before being cast out.

No more discussion
Your skin burns. Your hair prickles. You are frisked by a hurricane.

There are no questions. You might have thought that there would be some final consultation, that you would have to defend your case to this final arbiter. But the Pansekritis has no interest in your words. It marks your paperwork with its own name, which is to say, with itself.

Then it is finished noticing you.

You are left holding something that looks like a lease document, but that weighs on your hand like a shield. You must deliver it to the Ambassador, and it will put the Devils in their place.

Failed event
Staring into something blinding
You stand at the outskirts of the court, in an attitude of supplication, with your knees slightly bent and your palms outward. As long as you hold this appearance of worship, no one troubles you. You may watch others come and go.

But the longer you wait, the less you understand. Is the Pansekritis making rulings, or does it merely affirm those that have gone before? Is it a person of sorts, or something rather less, or more?

It dispenses with the population of an entire city and does not grant their petition to be remembered, after plague has taken them all.
Successful event

The Pansekritis grants an Obliteration against a city founded on land that did not belong to the founders, and authorises a Ritual of Cessation against a language that should no longer be spoken.

This is the Pansekritis: not fire, ice, hurricane or trumpet blast, but a Power for which there is no difference between intention and achievement.

Study the signs outside the Court of Mules
You can listen for rumours about the cases being heard within.
Several purposes
The Court of Mules attends to spirits that inherit more than one category; to exceptionally stubborn and determined spirits; and to appeals on rulings that have already been given. The queue moves slowly.
Contest the interpretation of the Embassy lease
To be seen in the Court of Mules, one must either belong to the Court by nature, or be sent by another functionary.
Solid attention
You must surrender your Testament of the Feather in order to be given a place in line. Then you must wash your body with a sponge dipped in vinegar-water.

After this, the masked attendant kneels beside you on a square of bleached linen. She takes careful and copious notes. She does say, with a sigh, that you can never tell with contracts drawn up by Devils.

Finally she asks: should the Ambassador of Albion hold the Toll-Tower, though it belonged to the Devils for millennia? Though she has already stretched her time with imported hours? Though she has no respect for bounds?
Yes, she has made great progress
She needs just a little more time.

Game note: This choice will commit you to act against the Devils and for the Ambassador.

"Very well," says the attendant. "The Mayflies control precedent that pertains to unfairly short contracts, rents, and leases of life. Ask them to rule."
When it's put that way, no
Albion has no rightful claim.

Game note: This choice will commit you to act against the Ambassador.

"Then we are pursuing an eviction," says the attendant. "The Court of Oaks controls precedent around unreasonable delays and matters of endurance. Ask them to rule."
Seek a removal of your Curdled Soul flaw
The spirits of the Court of Mules offer you insight.

Game note: This will remove your Flaw: Curdled at the permanent cost of 1 Iron.

An antidote
The memories are vivid, varied, distracting. In many cases they are disturbing, even frightening: marriages of defiance, unsuitable love affairs, children born to imprisoned mothers. A duckling adopted by a sympathetic poodle. The synthetic growth of a Rubbery Appendage. A thousand thousand rejections of status and social striving, in exchange for a moment's true connection, no matter how unlikely that connection might seem. The Blue Kingdom swallows fame, fortunes, titles and estates as though they had never been. But it cannot digest these events. They persist, sapphires caught in the crop of a basilisk.

Subcontract your Litigator to another applicant
A masked shark would pay for the assistance of your Litigator. You will also need to wait while its case is made.

Game note: This will exchange a Barrel of Unseasoned Hours for 100 Sovereigns.

Some grumbling
The Litigator: the Cowled Loquacitor(name)Litigator: the Embittered Devil(name)Litigator: the Nameless Spirit(name) is mildly annoyed by the extra work, and the shark's concerns are not easy to understand.

You wait to one side, while the Litigator: the Cowled Loquacitor(name)Litigator: the Embittered Devil(name)Litigator: the Nameless Spirit(name) pulls three of the shark's teeth and conveys them to the attendant of the Court. Further ceremonies are conducted in an oversized bathtub, wheeled in by three Yoked spirits for the purpose.

After considerable splashing, the shark passes onward to the Court of Whales, and you receive your payment.

It issues Testaments of the Feather, when the attendants think another Court should listen to someone's rightful claim. And they say that Lightless souls can be cured here, though at a significant price. As you watch, a Yoked Shade carries in a basket of figs.

At last, Ape 2047 may approach the window. You perform your handshakes.

The attendant holds the lease close to the eyeholes of its mask. Finally its voice-jar speaks. "Clarifications on existing contracts go to the Court of Mules. You will need a Testament of the Feather to be heard there."

It hands the lease back and summons Ape 2048.

Achieve a Testament of the Feather
A matter of convincing the attendants of this Court that your case deserves to be heard by another.

Game note: A Testament of the Feather can be used to gain access to various officials elsewhere in the Blue Kingdom.

Failed event

Perhaps, suggests the Court, you are meddling in things that you ought to leave alone. Nuisance suits are not regarded kindly in the Blue Kingdom.
Successful event
A grant of Favour
You tell a story that moves the attendant to tears. You invoke the influence of your benefactor. You embellish certain points, and gloss over others.

It is enough. "I have a friend in another Court. You will only need to bring a message from me..." says the attendant, proud of his generosity. All the trouble of your case will land on someone else.

The attendant inscribes the Testament of the Feather in clay and bakes it with the glare of his will. When you pick it up, it feels like a brick that has been left in the sun.

The vaulted ceiling is distant as a cloud-forest canopy. The spirits, too, are mostly vegetative: an unyielding bronzewood; a Welsh yew; some species with scales for bark. The officials and attendants of the court are masked, Yoked shades in muddy overalls. Even this court honours the Pansekritis, highest official of the House of Days. Its name is worked into the soil, expressed in the exact proportions of sand and clay and loam.

Observe the Court of Oaks
One may watch, with or without entering the court itself.
Endurance
The Court of Oaks serves creatures with very long lives, those with a great deal of patience, and those bringing suit because a contract or term of service overran its natural bounds. Souls with the Flickering flaw can be remedied, though at significant cost. Those with the Yoked status can be returned to Ephemera status on recognition that they have been too long in service.
A Rental Dispute: Wait for a ruling on an overlong contract
You will need a tremendous persistence and a suitable bribe.
Failed event
Is this even a line?
You get into what you think must be the queue. It doesn't move.

You stand. Then you sit. Then you lie down. Nothing moves.

The spirit of a fungal colony occupies a space next to you. It smells like dirt and dark permanence. It doesn't go anywhere either.

You haven't eaten since you got here. There are no changes of light to help you guess how long that has been. It feels like days. It feels like weeks.

In the end the need to stretch your legs becomes overwhelming.
Successful event
Granted, eventually
The attendant asks about the Ambassador, Albion, your opinion of Devils and your reasons for siding with them against your own kind.

She inks your tongue and takes its imprint. She tests your spittle with drops that turn it a vigorous puce, "to check for spite."

Then she writes out her own notes in handwriting like the trace of a vine. She adduces five precedents which have bearing on this case. On the lease itself, she places a symbol which means 'the tree that dies upright in the forest, but does not fall until a snow comes.'

Claim the Status of Ephemera
You have been Yoked long enough. The Court of Oaks might rule you to be free.
Languid investigation
First there is the wait to reach the attendant's window. Then, when at last you do, it is in no hurry to collect your information. From courtesy, it asks you first about your birth and family, and then about your travels, and next about your state of health. Several hours pass before it even opens an inquiry about your status... So you talk and talk until your breath is exhausted, but it is enough, in the end. You're marked Ephemera rather than Yoked, and now you may move about as the Ephemera do.

But from the crown of the narrative, look back, and see. There were circumstances. There was wind, snow, and wildfire, years whose austerity became a tight ring inside the body.

There were also springs of sunward reaching, of sending roots into the available crevices.

The official of the court embellishes your copy of the lease with roughly fifty small red stamps, then shouts for you to make way for the next applicant.

Game note: Take your paperwork to the Pansekritis to have it converted from word into action.

Claim the Status of Ephemera
Perhaps you were Antedeceased when you arrived here, but life is so short! Produce a witness to your death, and be recognised as Ephemera.
Your companion
Your Litigator is required to recount your death, from personal experience. They describe an incident with the escaped spirit of a bull elephant, a lack of nerve, a heart attack. Two Court officials in a row go on break before the description is complete. The third attendant does stamp you Ephemera, however. The mark is applied to your lower lip and it is the iridescent green-black of a beetle's carapace.
