Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Feed the cat
It looks criminally thin. You could count its ribs, if you had the inclination.
A silent guide
The cat dives into your box of supplies, mewing joyously. When it's eaten its fill, it leaps free and trots off into the undergrowth.

Before it vanishes from sight, it pauses and gives you a meaningful look, then returns to your side. When it trots off a second time, you follow.

The stray leads you to a pair of ruinous, ivy-choked towers. The door to the first is blocked by rubble; the door to the second hangs from its hinges. The cat enters the latter. You follow. It leaps from stone to crumbling stone, higher and higher, occasionally pausing for you to catch up.
Retreat back into moonlit fantasy
You prefer your dream-visions to a reality which vacillates wildly from the terrifying to the mundane.
Return of the knight
You gaze into the sky, hoping to see the moon.

When that doesn't work, you sit instead and revisit a tried-and-tested technique. You build a painstaking image of the Cup inside your head, and focus on it furiously.

A few moments later you stand in one fluid motion, your sword at your hip, and buckle your armour tight around your waist.
Cross the narrow beam
How light are you on your feet?
Failed event

Game note: You have failed the quest for the Martyr-King's Cup. You can choose another Ambition at London, New Winchester, Pan, or Sky Barnet.

Game note: If you fail this challenge, you will fail the Ambition. Consider approaching from another angle.

A moment of horror
As you place your foot on the beam, the cat flees in terror. It groans and creaks alarmingly as you rest your weight. When you take your first step, you hear a splinter, a crack.

Something gives way. The beam snaps.

Your fall lasts forever and a moment. Treetops arrest your descent, but several of your favourite bones still shatter in grotesque ways upon impact with the ground.

It takes weeks of rest in your cabin to recover, and when you do, you can't remember why you were climbing that tower in the first place.

    • Ambition: The Martyr-King's Cup = 100 [[COMPLETE]You have failed the quest for the Martyr-King's Cup. Perhaps a more worthy quester will take up your mantle one day]

    • Stained = 1 [The devils of Carillon claim to be experts in the assessment and improvement of the soul. They would describe yours as over-rich, cindered and irrevocably damaged.]

    • +5 x Terror

    • +15 x Date

    Triggers event:  King's Idyll Station

Successful event
Crossing the beam
As you place your foot on the beam, the cat flees in terror. It groans and creaks alarmingly as you rest your weight. When you take your first step, you hear something splinter.

You ignore it. Stare straight ahead. Do not look down. One foot in front of the other. Ignore the wind that batters you like a ram. Do not look down. Ignore the ominous creaking. Do not look down, because if you look down, you will fall.

You are ablaze inside. You are focusing so furiously that you do not realise you've crossed until you feel solid stone beneath your feet.
Order one of your crew to retrieve it for you
No sense risking your own life.
A simple job
It won't be a problem, you assure the nervous engine-stoker as he surveys the weather-vane ruefully.

"It's an awful drop, Captain," he murmurs.

Nonsense! You give him a light shove.

Groaning, the stoker climbs out, hanging from the rusted iron by his fingertips. For a moment it seems like he might make it! But the unfortunate fellow over-stretches himself and falls with a wail into the forest below. After that, the rest of your crew abjectly refuse to go out and risk their lives for a filthy, forgotten flag.
Climb out on the weathervane alone
The stone is slick with lichen. The weather-vane itself is so decayed it could give way at any moment. All this for a ragged flag.
    • Iron challenge (67 for 100%)

    • Proving your Worth: The Cloak of the Lion = 3 [In order to retrieve the Cloak, you will need to pay tribute before the great antlers at Pan; or alternatively, somehow collect it from the precarious weather-vane]

As you hang by your fingertips from the corroded metal, something gives way. The iron crumbles under your fingers like stale bread.

Your fall lasts forever and a moment. Treetops arrest your descent, but several of your favourite bones still shatter in grotesque ways upon impact with the ground.

It takes weeks of rest in your cabin to recover, and when you do, you can't remember why you were climbing that tower in the first place.

    Triggers event:  King's Idyll Station

Successful event
A successful clamber
You cling by your fingertips to the corroded metal and edge out over the abyss. Your stretching, flailing hand brushes against the tangled flag once, twice, three times... On the fourth attempt, you manage to snag it on your thumb and drag it back with you to safety. At last, it is done. It might look like a dirty old rag, but you have acquired the Cloak of the Lion. You think.
Leave for now
You can return at any time.
