The Fire that Follows
You fetch water, sand and blankets to divide and smother the fire in sections. But as soon as you open the grate, the fire lashes out. You spring aside, and it envelops an engineer.

He staggers from the conflagration. As you watch, words bloom like scars where the fire touched:

The glass-sickness is in my lungs. My real name is Abraham Carter. The constables will pay a hundred sovereigns for my capture.

He screams, trying to hide the confessions, and stumbles away. You eventually manage to quench the lurid fire, but not before other crew are burned. You have those affected confined to a cabin, for their own protection.
Successful event
Beaten back
The fire fights back, lashing like a whip, its blue blaze purging all other colour from the room.

You choke one corner, then another. The fire dies by inches.

Then you clean every scrap of its ash from the fire box and begin the long, slow process of relighting the engine's fire and getting the boiler back to temperature. The newly kindled flames burn a comfortable yellow.
Starve the flames
Your locomotive will suffer while they burn out, but you should be able to prevent a boiler rupture.
Starved
Pipes shriek and split. Your locomotive threatens to shake itself apart. You ease the pressure where you can and make the most vital repairs.

Eventually, the roaring fire dies down to sullen, sapphire embers.

"Will it come back, Captain?" an engineer asks.

You cannot answer.
