The First Taste of Petrichor is a Sunless Skies Random Event.

Story description[]

You have eaten the last of your mundane supplies. Now, your cook has begun to serve petrichor, the food that the dead eat.

It looks like familiar foods – fruits and bread and pies – but is as pale as the ghost of a moon. It smells like a meadow after rainfall, and, when you bite it, has the consistency and hurried sweetness of spun sugar.

Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Indulge yourself
You must keep your strength up.
A feast
Despite its fragility, and the speed with which it melts on your tongue, the petrichor is filling. It all has that same sugary taste, regardless of whether it looks like loaves or meat, but if everything must taste the same, surely it's better to taste sweet than bitter? "Go carefully, Addressed As(SpeechFormal)," the cook warns, when you return for seconds. "If you eat too much petrichor, it can make it harder to leave the lands of the dead."
Eat sparingly
Consume only what you must.
You examine the colourless contents of your plate
Was this mortal food, once? Do figs have ghosts? Are these the souls of peaches, fallen early from the tree? When a baker eats a loaf, does some essence of it remain – some echo of grain and yeast, recalling the shape into which it was kneaded by living hands? Do those flimsy remains find their way here, to the Blue Kingdom? You have heard that subsisting on petrichor turns your blood into ichor: milky and oozing (and, darker tales hint, delicious to the dead). That if you eat too much you will never be able to leave, nor want to.
