Storylet Name Unlocked With Effects Notes
Entreat the Sisters in Green and Gold for an Aspect of Verdance

They were educated by the Regent of the Reach, once, the Venturer whispers, before coming to the Forge. They know the secrets of longevity and expansion.

A sisterhood of grove and grave

The Sisters take you to their chamber, which flickers with Correspondence. It singes their long gowns of moss and marsh, but the Sisters pay it no heed. The youngest, whose dress is the colour of sunlight drowned in a mire, smiles with all seven of her eyes. They examine the quality of your offering, the rings in the bronzewood, the smaller plants and fungus still attached to the chunk of tree. They whisper in the ruined languages of the Reach. At last they turn and smile as one. Your gift is acceptable.

The loss of the Testament of the Feather might only happen after choosing "Secure entry to the Forge with a Testament of the Feather"; it may be a bug to see it here instead.

Advanced alteration value probably needs examination.

Entreat the Principalities of Chalcedon for an Aspect of the Hourglass

They were once servants of the King of Hours, the Venturer informs you. They helped guide the Graven of the White Well across the heavens and remained at the Sapphir'd King's court.

A remembrance of sovereigns past

Sand runs through the Principalities' hourglass frames and they hold chimes in their hands. They use these to sift your gift. Their expressions remain unchanging, but after many silent moments, the eldest of their number begins to sound a single doleful bell. Your gift is accepted.

Entreat the Red Ministers for an Aspect of Incarnadine

The Forged Venturer tells you they hoard the properties of vitality, wanderlust and loathing. They appreciate poor quality souls for their collection.

Scarlet Masks of Paper

The singing ministers cease their choir, and sheave their serrated wings of brittle glass. The ministers move from their misericords. They clutch their polished abacuses and their thin silver tools of measuring and binding. They examine your offering carefully, their red masks rendering them inscrutable. Finally, a nod runs through them, like a tide over a shore. Your gift is spirited away.

Advanced alteration value probably needs examination.
Entreat the Thrones for an Aspect of Dominion

"The Thrones have jurisdiction over the Aspects of Dominion; the principles of rulership," the Venturer tells you, "This was their reward from the King."

The end of days and the dominions of hours

The Thrones command the heights of the Forge. Within the highest and strongest of the towers, where the glass and smog rises fastest and thickest, you meet the trinity of Thrones. The oldest and most terrible, whose body resembles nothing so much as a battered industrial loom, lurches forward to examine your offering. The Thrones admire their hulking reflections in the panes of glass. They take them from you.

Craft a Scrive-Spinster

"As was taught by the Regent of the Reach to the Binary," says the Venturer reverently.

A seeker of lost knowledge

Old recipes are consulted. The Sisters in Green and Gold mediate between the Ministers White and Red. A dozen sheaves of wood are burnt, rekindled and burnt again. At last, they have something approaching a soul. This is carefully guided through the echoing halls, growing as it is imbued by each spirit of the appropriate character. You watch as the Sisters pin quills to the form, sewing parchment wings onto its bronzewood flesh. Correspondence is traced from the walls onto its hood, claws curl, yearning for scraps of old knowledge. It is, at last, unmistakably, a Scrive-Spinster.

Game note: The Forge will need time to recover after this. You will need to re-access it later.
Success! Game note: When the Forge's Caprice has risen too high, it becomes unruly. The Forge will need time to recover after this. You will need to re-access it later.

Failure!
A flaw in the imprint

A tattered wing unfurls like an armistice flag, then hangs limply. Indigo eyes flare as the Spinster shrieks. It launches itself at the Thrones and begins, desperately, to catalogue them. The Red Ministers set it alight. The Sisters of Green and Gold give you all that remains after the flames are extinguished.

Craft an Immaculate Soul

"Ah, the food of the gods!" The Venturer sounds like they approve.

A soul in your charge

The soul is guided through the Forge's chambers by a procession of spirits, immaculately ordered. They ensure that the Correspondence quickens the soul in just the right way, that its cracks are repaired to leave only the most exquisite suggestions of flaws. The soul is tempered and nurtured by each spirit that touches it, until, at last, pristine, it is placed in your hands. The spirits seem to feel that they have bequeathed something infinitely precious to you.

Failure!
An unfortunance

The soul is tempered and nurtured by each spirit that touches it, until, at last, pristine, it is placed in your hands. The spirits seem to feel that they have bequeathed something infinitely precious to you. Crack! The Venturer jumps. Sigils screech across the soul's surface, then skitter away like rats before a light. The soul dissolves into queasy yellow slurry. The Red Ministers shrug before fetching the cleaning apparatus.

Craft crewmembers

Another soul under your aegis, another body for your engine.

New hands

The spirits bestow their blessings on the new flesh. It drips like candle wax, slowly firming up. When it is 'ready', it glows like a new lamp. You will have to assign these new crew to single-bunk cabins. Your new crew members stumble like newborn colts. The spirits linger at their side until assured they can walk, talk and think independently.

New from old

The spirits bestow their blessings on the new flesh. It drips like candle wax, slowly firming up. When it is 'ready', it glows like a new lamp. You will have to assign these new crew to single-bunk cabins. Some of these new crew look familiar. You recognise those eyes, though not in that face. That smile but not those teeth. That laugh, but not at that pitch. Your new crew shamble towards your engine; they already know the way. The spirits watch on, waiting for your approval.

Leave the Forge

You have done all you care to here.

Game note: You will need to pay to enter the Forge again. You will, however, keep any Aspects you have already gained.
