Story description[]

"The Navigator's Promise(Magician)"

Trigger conditions[]

The Navigator's Promise ≥ 1000

Interactions[]

Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Ask what more Miss Peppercorn needs
The Navigator looks decidedly crestfallen. Even the jovial piping of the circus calliope cannot cheer him.
    • The Navigator's Promise = 1000 [The travelling magician will meet you back at Polmear and Plenty's Inconceivable Circus. She will charge 200 Sovereigns]

Not a feline fan
"I need a cat. I will not catch one for you." She scowls. "And once you have one, you better keep an eye on it. I don't like the gossiping little things – they are too fond of scandal to be trustworthy."
Offer the magician the Useless Cat
At last! A use!
Immensely self-satisfied
Miss Peppercorn places a plush, red, velvet cushion before the full length mirror. She addresses the cat in your arms. "I forbid you from sitting on that cushion. It is my favourite. You will only ruin it."

The cat squirms free. It leaps straight to its inevitable destination – the cushion. There it freezes, mesmerised by its own reflection.

The mirror reflects a steaming jungle of thick ferns and amber light. Dappled light pours down on the Useless Cat's reflection – it is a tiger, vast and strong. The cat— The tiger yawns slowly, admiring its fangs. The Useless Cat and its reflection begin kneading – the tiger's thick claws flexing, the Cat's thin claws shredding the cushion.

The Fortunate Navigator gasps; the Useless Cat blinks smugly. The Cat hasn't seen anything it didn't already suspect.

Game note: You will not lose the Useless Cat. However much you might wish to.

Offer the magician Monsieur Francois
The Magician at Polmear and Plenty's is not expecting this cat. So this almost certainly won't cause any problems.

Catch a dock cat and bring it to Miss Peppercorn
How hard can it be?
Failed event

Game note: You'll need fresh gossip as bait.

At a cost
You order your crew to scour the docks with a fishing net and that rumour about the state of the Captivating Princess's latest admirer. It is not long before the indignant sound of hissing announces their partial success. They have a cat, but a thoroughly clawed stoker has resigned on the spot. Miss Peppercorn directs a crewmember to deposit the thrashing bundle before the mirror. The caught cat only stills when it catches sight of its own reflection.

The reflection shows a tiger, sitting among the tatters of a flimsy fishing net. Behind it is a steaming, amber-lit jungle. The tiger claws its way free of the final strands, steps closer— With a scornful yowl, the cat steps into the mirror.

The Fortunate Navigator gasps. Miss Peppercorn beams.
