A hook and a spindle
It's no good. Pan's crowds teem with ash-faced Word-Eaters. They herd you into a tumbled temple, where one produces a copper hook, another a spindle. Afterwards, you stumble back out into the jumbled streets, your head empty of stories.

Staying sharp
You stay alert as you travel the streets, steering clear of the silent, staring, grey-faced men. Another visitor is less careful. You see the Word-Eaters pin them against a wall and extract their stories with a hook and a spindle.

Take a sizeable escort as you go about your business
A dozen hard-faced crew ought to do it.

A numerical advantage
The presence of your crew emboldens the Word-Eaters, who gather into a band of their own. Your two forces meet at a crossroads. A face-off becomes a scuffle, then a brawl, then a battle. Shots ring out. Your crew – or at least most of them – manage to get you back to your engine, but not before one of the Word-Eaters had begun extracting your stories with a spindle and hook.

A numerical advantage
Your crew ring you about, forming a deterrence of fists and fierce expressions. The Word-Eaters slink away, casting covetous glances at you: skyfarers are fat with stories.
