The Laboratories is a Sunless Skies Story Event.

Story description[ | ]

The Liberation have kept most of the Berrenger's laboratories intact. Every functioning laboratory has a sign-up sheet tacked to its door, begging for volunteers. Scintillants flit back and forth carrying clipboards, calipers, vapour-spewing flasks. There is no shortage of work to be done, and few brave enough to do it.

An unappealing proposition
The Scintillants hand you a beaker of frothing grey fluid. "Stick your hand into it until you can touch the bottom," one of them tells you, her voice betraying no hint of concern for your well-being. "But do it slowly. Too fast and you'll experience no measurable effects, and only a little pain." You attempt to follow her instructions, but the liquid clings to you like concrete and blisters your skin. You withdraw your hand as fast as you can, making her hiss between her teeth and shake her head. "Next!"

An unappealing proposition
"Here – drink this. It's perfectly safe." A Scintillant presses a fizzing tube into your hands, then immediately runs for cover.

You examine the liquid. The smell alone could strip the skin from a cat. Nevertheless, you drink.

"How odd," says the Scintillant after a lengthy pause. "I thought—"

Colours unfold from his open mouth like a kaleidoscopic chrysanthemum. For the next few days, you wander in a landscape of spirals and fireworks. When you recover you find yourself in bed, sweat-soaked, your ears still ringing.

It is a chance to push the boundaries of knowledge without risking your own crew.

A lack of enthusiasm
It's not that the Scintillants are afraid to risk their lives – most have lost eyebrows, a few have lost much more. They are simply too busy. "Volunteer as a guinea pig," advises one. "It's difficult to get your own experiment off the ground, but you can still do your part!"

A mustering
The Berrenger's Laboratories are as individualist as anywhere else on the wreck, and you must pitch to each volunteer individually, talking them through why your proposal is worth their time. Evidently, your proposal has merit – you manage to corral a broad selection of Scintillant volunteers, many of whom abandon their own in-progress experiments just to help you out.

Surely some brave souls among your crew will leap at the prospect of risking their lives for science?
A hint of reluctance
Your crew are less enthusiastic than you might have hoped, but they place the fiery Scintillant masks over their faces with weary acceptance and file after you into the Laboratories.
