Guide[]

This is a location in The Forge of Souls. Its entry fee is one of the following:

The Lamentation of Mists may be petitioned to change your status from Ephemera to Yoked. This will cost 3 Unseasoned Hours.

The Lamentation of Mists may be petitioned for a Testament of Salt. Your choice of which crewmen to act as collateral has no bearing on the result; the trial is determined randomly.

The Lamentation of Mists is involved in the following quests:

Story description[]

A Scrive-Spinster the size of a chapel rests in the centre of the Chamber of Restoration. Her wings are pale as lambskin and thick as a Bible. She holds her wings to her, and keens in soft utterances of fragmentary speech. She is bound by a long length of chain to a massive book, illuminated in black and gold, and shackled to the floor. As you enter, her blind face turns to you.

Trigger conditions[]

Location: The Forge of Souls
Area: Limbo
Frequency: Always (100%)

Interactions[]

Storylet Name Unlocked With Effects Notes
Ambition: ask for permission to see the Roll of Ash
The Bedevilled Didact needs to consult it, to learn more about the strife between the suns.
    • The Didact's Investigation = 40 [The Didact wishes to consult the Roll of Ash. Deliver him to the Forge of Souls, and speak to the Lamentation of Mists]

Permissions
The Lamentation examines you for a long moment. One wooden finger, long as a spear, taps thoughtfully on the floor. Then she rattles off a staccato set of directions through the Lyceum. The Didact scribbles them down. "Return here afterwards," she says. "Would speak."

Leaving the Lamentation's presence, you follow her directions into the jumbled chaos of the Lyceum. The route is complicated, but seems largely untraveled, as if the local denizens avoid it.

Eventually, you enter a cavernous chamber. The Bedevilled Didact gasps.
Inform the Lamentation of the Ombudsman's disappearance

He was already dead, and now he is gone.

    •  Corruption at the Court = 13 [Return to the Lamentation at the Forge of Souls, and tell her that the Ombudsman has been dealt with]
The Lamentation's gratitude

She flaps her great, fragile wings. "Waste. Would have made a good Servitor, if he had only understood. Bureaucracy serves power, not the other way."
She plucks a sheath of paper from one of her shelves. "Recompense. Maps of the Kingdom from ages past." She wrenches a white stone tablet from the ground. "A study of the fears of stars."

Request access to the Forge of Souls

You have heard that the fabled Forge can be found somewhere in the Lyceum.

A denial, an abjuration
"Not for you." The Lamentation's voice is like shredding silk. "Edict forbids its usage. I wish—" Her voice quavers like a fly held in a web. "Would cast me out, burnt, broken..." She trails off, turning her attention back to the broken tablets scattered across the Lyceum. The Unworthy Scribe leans in, the heat of his flesh against your shoulder, the chill of his skull near your neck. He explains that the Forge is forbidden from making new things. Its location would do you no good, surely.
Request permission to repair the Forge of Souls

The Lamentation would not, technically speaking, be responsible for its restoration.

Usage of the Forge

Abruptly, she dismisses the Unworthy Scribe. As the great bronzewood doors swing closed, the Lamentation crawls closer to you, softly keening as she leans over you.
You must use the forge to make new Scrive-Spinsters for her. Her tone is insistent, desperate. They were made here once, before their library was destroyed. Then you may do as you wish-
The Amaranthine Edict over the Forge would not be broken, so long as nothing new was made at the Forge. The Westernmost King would not concern himself with that. She's been alone for so long. And her work at the Lyceum would only benefit... She drifts away from you, still whispering.

    •  Rekindling the Forge = 15 [You have the Lamentation's permission, on condition you also use the Forge to make more Scrive-Spinsters.]
Beseech the Lamentation for a Testament of Salt

The Lamentation can bestow this: the recognition that a spirit is liberated from the shackles of the mortal life.

Game note: If successful, you will gain a Testament of Salt.
Beseech the Lamentation to Yoke you to the Lyceum
If accepted, you will become Yoked: a lowly worker in the bureaucracy of the Blue Kingdom.
A worker
The Lamentation leans close, balancing on its spindly limbs unsteadily. Her blind face looms near to yours, like a moon about to cause a lot of tidal disruption.

She searches for an appropriate analogy, and at last settles upon a termite mound. She suggests that the library is like such a thing. It has its needs and its workers to see to those needs. There are threats to the harmony of the mound: parasites and predators. There are rules to obey and hierarchies to observe. Are you, the Lamentation wonders, a suitable termite?

She flies back to perch upon a pile of huge black tablets. She is waiting an answer.
Become Yoked: Suggest that you could be of service
You wish to be Yoked. You are willing to work in the Lyceum to earn your status.
A casket of sapphire
The Lamentation would like something recovered from the Lyceum "Sapphire caskets contain treaties between the conjunctions. Some contain information that is precious to me. Locate such a casket, bring it to me. Hidden, hidden from me." The Lamentation turns away, her chain rattling behind her. "Serve well, and I shall offer reward."
    •  A Scrive-Fledgling = 2 [The Lamentation requests you recover a casket of sapphire from the Lyceum]
Become Yoked: Offer Hours instead of finding a casket of sapphire

You can be more use as a captain with an engine than as a termite. A bounty of hours should let her accomplish what she needs without your intervention.

A tithe of you

The Lamentation considers you. There is silence in the Library. At last she speaks. "Sufficient. More time; my servants fail. Want to please me; hurry. The work is sloppy."
She bids you open the book chained to her. You must sign with her quill. Your blood will be the ink. There are words written before your name, in a language you have never before seen. There. You are bound to service in the Blue Kingdom.

Game note: You will become Yoked. The Embittered Devil can assist here.
Give the Lamentation a Casket of Sapphire

You have returned bearing one of the Caskets she requested.

Unearthed hope

The Lamentation flies towards you and snatches up the casket. She carries it as if it is as light as a feather.
"Gratitude. Contain concordats between Binary and Sapphire. One will contain instruction I require."
She bids you open the book chained to her. You must sign with her quill. Your blood will be the ink. There are words written before your name, in a language you have never before seen.
There. You are bound to service in the Blue Kingdom.

Game note: You will become Yoked.
Return to the Lyceum

On reflection, perhaps not.

Game note: You will need to petition the Lamentation again for another audience.
