Chat[]
- [0] \"I'm settling in nicely, thank you. You've a good crew here. And a sharp one. They've already realised it's wise not to bet against me at cards.\" \n\nHe grins. \"They demanded I stop being easy on them. They can tell when I aim to lose. I'm not an excellent liar.\"
- [10] \"Where am I from? Do you ask everyone that?\" The Navigator laughs – he's just teasing. \"No, I understand. It's the accent, isn't it? I'm an Empyrean, but my English is a Londoner's. I grew up there. Worked for the Empyreal Ambassador in London.\"\n\nHe straightens, proudly. \"My master negotiated the deal that led to the opening of the Avid Horizon. Not many can say that.\"
- [30] \"That was kind of you, Captain. I had hoped that having someone speak for me, show what I've made of myself, would help. Glad it wasn't needed, of course. But you were there in case it was.\"\n\nHe touches your arm. \"I value that.\"
- [40] It is hard to engage the Navigator's attention. He is rapt in thought. \"Oh, the crew are doing well, Captain. They trust you. That's important.\"\n\nHe returns to reading, and will say nothing of himself.
- [50] \"Have you ever made a promise, certain at the time you wouldn't be able to keep it? I've been thinking about it, ethically.\" There's a small pile of philosophy books by his bed. He must have found them at last port.\n\n\"I swore to my friend, so that he could die happy. Would he really mind if I failed him? I don't think that matters. He always trusted me. I couldn't live with letting him down.\"\n\nIt seems like your First Officer will not be able to focus until he has been to Eagle's Empyrean.
- [60] The body of the Navigator's friend sits in the Navigator's desk chair, by the window. The Navigator has taken a crate from the hold to serve as his own chair. \n\n\"A good officer can always improvise!\" The Navigator welcomes you into his cabin and offers you his bed to sit on. \"I don't suppose you've any tweezers, have you? I keep getting splinters from my new stool.\" He laughs, warmly. \"No matter. It's worth the discomfort. This is right.\"
- [70] \"Are we close? Am I needed at my station?\" The Navigator's eyes are bright; he's raring for battle. \n\nWhen you ask after the crew, his response is prepared. \"I've just been round, Captain. They're as battle-ready as they'll ever be. Lead us to the fight and we'll give you our all.\"
- [80] \"Oh, Captain! That was something.\" The Navigator is filled with nervous energy; he paces across his cabin. \n\n\"My friend saw the whole thing – he watched from here. Saw us besting a creature vaster than us, more ancient, more experienced in surviving the inky expanse. We came together as a crew and were victorious. Truly, we are as any noble warrior.\"\n\nHe catches your eye and looks slightly abashed. \"The crew fought well, Captain. That deserves recognition.\"
- [90] \"Come in!\" The Navigator has put his well-thumbed book of the 'Epic of King Gesar' to one side. He is mid-way through 'Scheherazade, or the One Thousand and One Nights'. He places a bookmark in it, and stands to greet you.\n\n\"Is there anything you miss, from before we came through? I always thought it would be the food. But it's not that. It's the stories. Before, when I read these, they needed magic to be real. Here... so much happens, they are more like someone's journal.\" He shrugs. \"They're still exciting. But not the same.\"
- [100] \"Good to see you, Captain.\" The Navigator's friend still sits by the window. A pillow has been placed behind his head, and a book is balanced on his lap. \n\nThe Navigator catches your glance. \"Thought I'd make him comfortable. Didn't know how long it would be till we found this magician, and his tiger.\" He blushes. \"I haven't, ah, told the crew what we're looking for. My work needs their respect. I don't want them to think me silly.\"
- [1200] \"Oh!\" The Navigator hadn't responded to your knock; you'd been forced to let yourself in. He has moved his friend from the window, and was staring out of it in a reverie. \"Did I thank you, Captain? For the big cat?\" \n\nHe's quiet for a long while. \"Do you think all cats have that duality? That they contain two beings?\" He turns to you. \"Sometimes I feel like I'd have to be two people to meet the promises I made my friend. I still have to try, though. Because I love him. I have to try.\"
- [1300] The Navigator reports on the crew the moment you enter. \"I haven't told them I requested we visit Death's Door. They wouldn't thank me. But they have noticed a change, despite my efforts. A stoker said I seemed 'determined'. 'Calmer'. That sounds like a good thing.\n\n\"There's something relaxing about having made a decision.\" He smiles fondly as he looks towards his friend, currently lying in his bunk. \"No matter what it is.\"
- [1400] \"Please, come in.\" The Navigator is quiet, and focused. He responds to your questions formally, providing concise and accurate details of the state of the crew and the engine. He steers away from anything about himself. \n\nAs you leave, he meets your eye. \"Does Death's Door wait for us all? I have to hope not. It's almost enough to make me devout, if it would give me a choice.\"
- [1600] \"Are we making progress to a Weft, Captain?\" The Navigator is eager, but not anxious. \"I am not eager to part with my oldest friend, but I've made a decision. The time has come to move on.\"\n\nHe is calmer than you have seen him. When you ask why, he is straightforward. \"I've decided to believe that you can earn your own death. I will grant my friend the burial he deserves, then will live the best life I can.\" He laughs. \"It was that, or to go mad.\"
- [1700] \"Are we making progress to Lustrum, Captain?\" The Navigator is eager, but not anxious.
- [2000] The Navigator begins with a run down of the state of the crew. It is both concise, and thorough. He requests an update of your own status – that he might assist were you indisposed. Work done, he relaxes.\n\n\"Are you fond of poker, Captain? I hear a game has been arranged for after the shift change. We could join in. It would be interesting to see whether my luck holds.\n\n\"Otherwise, of course, if you wanted to take the engine exploring, I'm ready to plot a course. I'm up for any adventure.\" Did he actually wink?"
Mother[]
- [0] Mother
- [10] The house is small, but is in an expensive location. It is well-kept: the windows are clean, the steps freshly swept. Asphodel is flourishing in an urn by the steps.\n\n\"It still feels like home.\" The Navigator gazes at the front door. \"It feels strange to know I'm just visiting.\"
- [20] The Grieving Matriarch is determined you'll join her for tea. She even refuses to let the servants assist. She is rushing towards the kitchen when the Navigator intervenes.\n\n\"We can't stay long. I mustn't impose on the captain. I promise I'll come back soon.\" He draws the Matriarch close, and lowers his voice. \"I came to ask... May I borrow the key? I haven't been able to pay my respects.\" \n\nThe Grieving Matriarch looks mortified."
Magician[]
- [0] Magician
- [1000] \"I've surpassed my father, you know. And he could fill Mahogany Hall.\" She pats the Navigator's arm. \"I'm certainly the only person who could do this as cheaply, and with as few accoutrements.\n\n\"In fact, I only need one more thing.\" She beams and looks at you, expectantly.
- [1100] Miss Peppercorn stands by the brass framed mirror. While she waits for you to procure a cat, she practices sleight of hand. \n\nShe is currently making a cane appear from thin air. The ease with which she makes it appear and disappear is in marked contrast to her fumbles as she tries to twirl it dramatically."
Chat1[]
- [0] \"I'm settling in nicely, thank you, Captain. You've a good crew here. And a sharp one.\" The Navigator already has visited every crewmember at their station.
- [10] The Navigator takes his feet off his desk when you enter his cabin. He's been reading. \"I didn't realise how much I missed reading.\"
- [30] The Navigator takes his feet off his desk when you enter his cabin. He's been reading the Epic of King Gesar. \"I always could get lost in it. Now, rereading it feels... more important.\"
- [60] The Navigator is sitting on his bunk – it's the only available seat. He holds up the Epic of King Gesar. \"I've been reading it to Altan. Figured it was finally my turn.\"
- [1300] The Navigator is sitting at his desk. He holds up the Epic of King Gesar. \"I've been reading it aloud to Altan. Figured it was finally my turn.\"
- [1400] The Navigator doesn't react when you knock. When you enter without permission, he apologises. \"Sorry, Captain. I was thinking.\"
