The New Street Line's Garret is a Sunless Skies Story Event.

Story description[ | ]

"This cramped attic space is a world away from New Street proper. The walls are peeling, the floor bare, and the furniture creaks with every uncomfortable movement. It does however offer an excellent view of the docks for agents of the Line to watch for opportunities. The Stationmaster salutes. Danger to the New Street Line(StationmasterStatus)"

Speak to the Stationmaster
What is his part in the New Street Line?
A proud rescuee
"Workworlder, boy and man." He scratches his beard. "Fifty years there, I was. Or five, on the outside. Freed by the Line last year. Anyway. Her Ladyship had a use for me, so here I am. Just put me to work; I'll be the most loyal number-two in the Empire, so I shall." When it comes to the question of funding, he looks sheepish. "Way it usually works, sir or ma'am is we worry 'bout getting our people to safety first. Then once they're settled they chip in a bit of cash as they can. Don't you worry though. The Ladyship handles that and'll make it all fiduc— financ—" He smacks his cheek. "Worth your time."
Confess to losing your runaway charge
Accidents happen. You had better tell him.
A sad look
"Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear." The Stationmaster sucks in his cheeks. "Well. I'm sure you did your best for them."
Agree to smuggle a passenger yourself
Where from and where to?
A poor soul in need of saving
"Good on you!" The Stationmaster stands proudly to attention. "Lessee. This one's been waiting their turn long enough, I reckon. Allow me to scribble down the details."
Trade Favour to distract the authorities
This will lower the heat on the New Street Line, but not reduce your personal Suspicion.
A trustworthy voice
You buy yourself a few minutes whispering into the right ears, sending the authorities off on a wild goose chase. The New Street Line remains under investigation, but you have bought it some more time to carry out the Work.

Arrange a smuggling operation
Not many captains can be trusted to carry escapees. Fortunately, they don't always need to know what they're transporting.

Too many questions
Your hunt for bribable crewmembers does not go well. Too many stowaways in recent months have made your fellow captains nervous. Most that you approach mistake your interest for a test and immediately clam up. Your questions, however, do not go unnoticed by the local officials. They reach for their notebooks. Danger to the New Street Line(HeatLevel)
Successful event
The right word in the right ears
It never takes long to find disgruntled crewmembers nursing drinks in a pub. A few sovereigns convince a few to adjust their engine's' cargo manifest and not look too carefully for stowaways the next time they stop at a workworld. The Fierce Philanthropist's other agents can take matters from there. You return to the attic to find payment already waiting. The Stationmaster counts it out a coin at a time.
Ship arms to a workworld
You'll never bring down a workworld, but an uprising here means fewer overseers here.

A dangerous question
Even the crew willing to consider your offer shrink at the thought of smuggling explosives aboard their employers' trains. It isn't long before word of your questions spread. This does not go unnoticed by the local officials with their little black notepads. Danger to the New Street Line(HeatLevel)
Successful event
Distant explosions
Smuggling munitions aboard a train bound for a workworld is a riskier proposition than arranging cabins for a few stowaways. It takes time to find a captain who looks trustworthy, but is willing to make the run. Eventually, you manage it, much to the Fierce Philanthropist's quiet approval.
Organise a mass escape from a workworld
Enough of your rescued workworlders are willing to take part. They only need guidance.

Biting off too much
The scheme goes wrong immediately with a failed attempt to 'borrow' an old cargo train from the scrapheap. Most of the former Workworlder crew manages to escape from the police, but not without a couple ending up in irons. The Fierce Philanthropist does her best to free them before they can spill the limited amount they know of the Line. Danger to the New Street Line(HeatLevel)
Successful event
A careful scheme
It requires the 'loan' of a cargo train and a whole new crew. Fortunately, enough ex-workworlders are willing to handle both the borrowing and the staffing. They depart on their mission, to sneak into dock, and smuggle as many as they can out under the cover of work. Word soon comes back of their success. The Fierce Philanthropist is said to be so happy with the success, she gives her staff an extra half-hour off.
Campaign for the Firebrand Conductor's release
"He's her Ladyship's nephew," the Stationmaster tells you. The Fierce Philanthropist never mentioned that. Perhaps she would be grateful if you used your current influence to free him.
Freedom!
A small crowd gathers to applaud the Firebrand Conductor as he strides from prison. Instead, an elderly man hobbles uncertainly out of the Empress' palace. His mouth is toothless, his little remaining hair matted and grey. Nothing remains of the young student you met on the docks. The Midnight Cells have taken everything, an hour at a time. The Fierce Philanthropist waits in her carriage to receive him. Her dark fingers grip a cigarette holder almost hard enough to snap it in two. The crowd remains oblivious to her identity, but she takes a moment to nod her gratitude to you before driving off.

A Tribute in your Honour
You've saved more people than anyone else in the New Street Line. Your rescuees have decided to celebrate your bravery, charity and commitment to the Cause.
Hero of the New Street Line
There is talk of a statue in your honour, though all agree (and you are not asked) that you are far too humble for something so grandiose. Soon, your whispering followers are at loggerheads over a suitable tribute. A ceremonial plinth, perhaps. A rose garden within sight of the Empress' palace. A university scholarship in your name. A wing of the local hospital. Perhaps an orphanage. The arguments rage long into the night.

Finally, there is agreement. The Stationmaster leads you, carefully blindfolded, to your tribute. After all the fighting and recriminations, it turns out to be a small bronze plaque on the back of a park bench, lovingly engraved 'In Honour Of The Great Catpain'.

It is, you are reminded, the thought that counts.
Ask about potential projects
The Stationmaster looks out of the window. A patrol from the Ministry is passing by.
More haste, less speed
"Your eagerness is a credit to you, but we can't go making it too easy for the peelers. Give things a bit of time to settle down first, yes?" He pats you on the back. "How about a nice mug of tea?"

Game note: Return in a few days to continue the Great Work.

Return to the street
You've done everything you came here for, for now.
Leaving the Line
The Stationmaster salutes. "I'll watch the shop until you return, Captain. Good travels."
