To determine the cause of their Melody...
...we seek the Wings of a Chorister Bee. What is it that makes them Sing, when their smaller sisters only Buzz?
WANTED: ANTS NEWLY INTRODUCED TO HUMANKIND
We have received curious reports from certain Homesteads, about the behaviour of Ants...
...given the Reports of the Ants circling those soon to Die, we consider the creatures apt for Study.
WANTED: HYBRAS PUS
The weeping Sores of Hybras may yield deeper Insight into the verdant Reach...
It may hold Properties either Beneficial or Detrimental to the Human Frame. We intend to find out...
WANTED: THE STOMACH OF A CANTANKERI
If one could better determine the Dietary habits of these ancient Beings...
We could establish the Relation they bear to other creatures through their Eating Habits – then we may know more of the History of this new Horizon...
WANTED: A FUNGAL CRINOLINE
Fungal meteoroids have been Observed with Leadbeater & Stainrod telescopes...
Were we able to take a Sample, we may learn the Origin of these celestial voyagers.
WANTED: A CLIPPING OF THE TITANIAN FLOWER
A gigantic Bloom, the only one of its Kind in this verdant Reach…
What is the purpose behind its gargantuan Size? Is it a unique Species, or merely an unusually large variety of the common Orchid?
WANTED: THE PEN OF A SCRIVE SPINSTER
If we may Determine how they are able to Write without refills of Ink...
...then we may be able to reproduce the Effect, or else learn something about the Nature of celestial Note Keeping.
WANTED: THE LIGAMENTS OF 'GUESTS'
The biological Infestation, known commonly as 'Guests', are in fact multiple Organisms...
They are bound together by something akin to a shared ligament. What is this alien Biology?
WANTED: A MANDRAKE FROM TRAITOR'S WOOD
There are reports of a curious Warbling, if not shrieking from the Wood. It reminds one of the classical Mandrake…
It would be a fine thing to study this, to learn more of the Defences of this marvellous Creature, and where it learned its Song.
WANTED: ICE FROM OLD TOM'S WELL
A most curious phenomenon, the shelves of black ice…
But from whence does it come? What Call has the Ice to freeze, in a place otherwise so warm?

The Phlegmatic Researcher welcomes you to his table with a booming: "Sit down, sit down!" He calls for one of his scouts to pour you a brandy. "Thanks to the hard-labour of my fine colleagues, we've done it!"

"It's just outside the window." The Phlegmatic Researcher points with his walking stick and raises his eyebrows theatrically.
An orchard is growing outside. The trees all bear – well, one cannot say fruit, for they bear potatoes, or carrots; while others have ears of corn hanging like pine cones. The Phlegmatic Researcher raises his glass. "I call them Sapling Knots. With careful discipline it's possible to harness the Reach's chaos and abundance. After that, one may dictate growth! Wood may be negotiated with."

The Phlegmatic Researcher's table is covered with thick grass, and growing rapidly. His colleagues are celebrating vigorously: more so even than last time. A scout is singing loudly (if tunelessly); another is stomping through the room in some kind of dance.

The Phlegmatic Researcher smiles uneasily. He is delighted and unsettled by the exuberance of the celebrations.
"The Reach contains certain growth-encouraging airs, which I acquired. Captains call it the Peacock Wind; I call it the Breath of God." The Phlegmatic Researcher strikes the table with his cane. "And this is what we've accomplished: a fertiliser so potent, it'll grow whatever you seed into it! It costs a fortune to make, but it's still a tremendous step forward! " He glances warily at the singing scout, whose voice is growing hoarse. "I don't know what's gotten into them. Although, I suppose it is a remarkable discovery."

The Phlegmatic Researcher sits alone in his cabin; a pie sits on his table, barely touched. He welcomes you, but sounds dejected. "Evil befell my colleagues. My research has been cancelled," he says. "And Leadbeater and Stainrod won't tell me why."

Speak with the Phlegmatic Researcher
Could he tell you more of his trouble?
"Leadbeater & Stainrod cut my funding and took away my work." He takes an unhappy nibble of pie. "They're shutting down research here. The entirety of their production is turning toward Apollonian Cinders."

And his colleagues? "One sang her voice away – and that didn't stop her. A few have shut themselves away with their research." The Researcher shakes his head. "There must be something here causing the fatal obsessions. If you'd help me discover it, I'd be grateful."

A calculating look flits across his face. "It'll need someone to go into the Reserve. They'll have to be well armed. You captains carry munitions, right?"

Research for the Reserve[ | ]

You are fulfilling the Phlegmatic Researcher's requests.

Interactions

Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Hand in the wings of a Chorister Bee
They are in pristine condition.
You are thanked for your efforts, and asked to wait while the Company sorts out your rewards. It might be a couple of days. Later, the Phlegmatic Researcher calls upon you. He hands you the envelope of Sovereigns. "Hideous creatures, Choristers," he says, fidgeting in his chair. "But I cannot accept that it is only by chance their wings are so exquisitely articulated that they generate song."
Hand in ants from a Homestead
After all they trouble they caused with your supplies, the Researcher better be pleased.
You are thanked for your efforts, and asked to wait while the Company sorts out your rewards. It might be a couple of days. The Phlegmatic Researcher invites you over for tea. "Marvellous creatures," he says, passing you an envelope of Sovereigns from the Company. "As far as I can discern, they only seem to mind when a human is about to die. I wonder what it is about us."
Hand in a sample of Hybras pus
It may take time for your hull to quit stinking, but at least now you can set the crew cleaning.
You are thanked for your efforts, and asked to wait while the Company sorts out your rewards. It might be a couple of days. Soon, the Phlegmatic Researcher summons you to collect your reward. He hardly waves his cane in greeting when you enter. "Awful stuff." He frowns. "No redeeming virtues."
Hand in the stomach of a Cantankeri
It is a foul thing you've carried in your hold. It better be useful.
You are thanked for your efforts, and asked to wait while the Company sorts out your rewards. The Phlegmatic Researcher summons you to his home to offer you payment and the fruits of his research. He has temporarily abandoned his laboratory, which is filled with incense smoke. "A distressing business," he says. "The stench of their innards is encrusted in my nostrils."
Hand in a Titanian clipping
It's only a sliver of the petal, but maybe it's enough.
You are thanked for your efforts, and asked to wait while the Company sorts out your rewards. It might be a couple of days. Eventually the Phlegmatic Researcher requests you visit his cabin. An orchid, similar to the Titanian blossom but for its size, sits on the table. "Perhaps Titania is the ur-orchid," he muses. "It is an orchid, at least."
Hand in a fungal crinoline from a mushroom meteoroid
If the right bohemian saw this, the fashion might be revived.
You are thanked for your efforts, and asked to wait while the Company sorts out your rewards. It might be a couple of days. The Phlegmatic Researcher calls upon you soon. His eyes are red, his face slightly swollen. "I react like this whenever I am near to it." He sniffs loudly, and hands you your reward.
Hand in the pen of a Scrive Spinster
You took it from her dead hands.
You are thanked for your efforts, and asked to wait while the Company sorts out your rewards. It might be a couple of days. The Phlegmatic Researcher asks you to visit. You find him hunched over the pen, frowning. "These d__n things are a puzzle. They drip with ink when the Spinsters hold them. But once the pens are out of their hands, they dry up. I've dissected a Spinster, and can tell you: they are not flying ink pots."
Hand in the ligaments of Guests
The butchering was somewhat traumatic, but science must march on.
You are thanked for your efforts, and asked to wait while the Company sorts out your rewards. It might be a couple of days. The Phlegmatic Researcher invites you to a picnic lunch. A morning glass of brandy has widened his smile. "You've brought me proof of an old theory of mine," he says, offering you a ham sandwich. He declines to explain further.
Hand in a mandrake from Traitor's Wood
At last, you and your crew will be able to enjoy restful sleep again.
You are thanked for your efforts, and asked to wait while the Company sorts out your rewards. It might be a couple of days. An envelope from the Phlegmatic Researcher is dropped off at your locomotive. Your reward is contained within, along with a few words apologising for not receiving you in person. The mandrake sang a song that reminded him of his boyhood. He's still in bed recovering.
Hand in a sample of ice from Old Tom's Well
It's a miracle nothing of yours froze off when you gathered this.
You are thanked for your efforts, and asked to wait while the Company sorts out your rewards. It might be a couple of days. The Phlegmatic Researcher invites you to his cabin. "I cannot make it melt," he says, stirring the black ice in his glass. "It is not of water, whatever it is. Tasting it does make one a tad melancholic, though."

Private Study[ | ]

Lying in bed, his swollen red leg raised up on a mound of pillows, the Phlegmatic Researcher flicks through pages and pages of notes. "Something in the Reserve has driven my comrades to madness." He raises himself up to look at you. "You'll need munitions if you want to help. Let me know when you're ready. I'll give you the best map I can."

Enter the Reserve
You'll be going alone. You'll have only your wits and your weapons.
The Researcher passes you a map of the wilderness. It looks like the work of a child. "The man who made that was one of our best scouts," he says proudly, "but our worst cartographer. He died from climbing too high, and the inevitable fall. Please, find out what's driven my friends to madness."

The Researcher's Crusade[ | ]

The Phlegmatic Researcher sits among piles of papers. His fingers are stained with ink; his leg is as swollen as ever.

Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Hand over the flower
Tell him what you found in the valley.
The Researcher digs his finger into the petals, and draws it out; it is coated with yellow pollen. "This is what they use for Apollonian Cinders," he whispers, sniffing gently. He coughs violently. "I feel... goodness. Goodness! This is it! The Cinders! This is what's driven their passions mad, driven my friends to ruin. And now the Company is pushing it onto the Empire." He leans over and grabs a tall stack of papers. He dips his pen in ink, and begins writing. "I'll see that they know they truth. I hope I can call on you."
Distribute Anti-Cinder Propaganda
The Researcher has written many, many, many pamphlets.
He mops his brow. The rag is ink stained, and darkens his forehead. "Here's the current stack," he says. "Take them to Delivering Anti-Cinder Propaganda(location). The people must know."
