The Silent Saint is a Sunless Skies Random Event.
Story description[]
A vast sheet of ice has frozen over the ossified corpse of a vanquished beast.
The surface is pockmarked with failed mining attempts. Collapsed shafts extend into the frigid tomb, and abandoned mining equipment litters the ice like discarded toys.
Legends and rumours gather about the beast entombed below; a mythic hoard yet unclaimed.

Breach the ice with your mining equipment
A good drill and some patience are all you'll need to plunder the secrets of the Silent Saint.

Mining accident
The drill bit bites deep; chunks of ice erupt from the surface and scatter across the frozen plain. A chorus of cheers falls silent as the drill stutters and dies.
A pair of engineers go out to manually adjust the drill's position. Suddenly and tragically it whirrs back to life. Work stops.

Forging a path
Your engineers set to the task with relish. Huge shards skitter across the frozen surface as the drill screams and chews apart the ice.
Within scant hours, your rig has broken open a long chasm in the ice. Shafts of distant light set the ice a deep and unearthly blue. You fetch rope and begin your descent.

Command your crew to break the ice
A dozen hardy miners armed with picks and pluck, as it was done in the Promise of Days.

Death in the ice
Your crew embark onto the ice, axes in gloved hands. Attempts at songs spark and die, as do the torches. The ice resists your blows and a fierce, gnawing dark draws in. As the temperature plummets, someone mumbles the Lord's prayer.
The wind howls; the cold bites. You are forced to call a retreat. Not all of your crew return from their labours.

No rest for the righteous
You strike out into the ice, a crew of able miners beside you. Blades meet ice; torches melt snow; shovels break into frozen ground.
The air cracks with the sound of breaking ice and a chorus of your crew's voices. As the snow whirls, you labour on, strike after strike. At last, just before a blizzard closes in, you have made a deep shaft into the packed ice.

Use explosives to breach the ice
There are few problems that dynamite can't solve.

|
Failed event |
Special is calculated as follows: 40+(2*Attention: the Burrower Below) * 1.67
|
Blood on the ice
You thought you'd precisely co-ordinated your crew with the explosives, but when you give the nod to your chief stoker to light the first fuse, your mistake becomes clear.
Afterwards, your surviving engineers are unable to save either their comrades or the remainder of the munitions. You return to your engine, leaving a greasy slick of blood across the ice.

Successful event | |||
Fire and thunder
The aim is simple; the logistics complex. You spend painful hours co-ordinating the exact sequence your engineers must take for success. There are grumbles.
But all is forgiven when you light the first fuse and the ice goes up in a series of meticulously timed explosions. The air is choked with smoke and ice. When it clears, you can see you've opened a wide crack in the ice.

Depart
Nothing wholesome abides here.
|
|
Into the sky
The wind howls. Your engine struggles to clear the ice frozen to it. Debris scatters in your wake, rolling across the surface like dice cast across a board. There is a fierce crunch, and then your engine is free.

Trivia[]
In an early version of Sunless Skies, the Silent Saint's body was accompanied by the carcass of a crustacean-like Messenger. This Messenger was later removed in modern versions of Sunless Skies. The older version of the Grave of the Silent Saint can be viewed here (external link).
