Pay your respects; light the lanterns
Lanterns doused by the sleet mark the ramshackle graves. Relighting them would commemorate the dead, but might disturb any cantankeri that still slumber here.

The wake of day
Once, every grave had a lantern. Now most are lost or stolen. Your crew search through drifts of muddy sleet and beneath mangled mining wreckage to replace what they can.
In the din light, your stokers struggle with the tinder and oil. The cold is fierce and chills the fingers to the bone. Eventually, matches strike and a thin string of light washes over the graves. But you've lingered too long: the ground begins to quake. The cantankeri stir.

The end of the promise
You are able to dig out a dozen or more lanterns from the muddy sleet. You find tinder to light them and rope to lash them to the wooden posts that mark the graves.
Some of the posts are marked with black crosses, indicating a member of the Windward Corp of Overmen and Shotfirers. A stoker sings a brief and dirgelike hymn.

Mine for unclaimed Hours
Stored deep within the rocks are the hours the miners didn't live to reach.

Too far
The rock is marked with earlier attempts. The passage of aggrieved cantankeri can be seen gouged into the stone. This will require caution.
You locate a likely seam and descend. The passage is tight, periodically squeezed between the heaving flanks of a sleeping cantankeri. Their bodies obscure the chasm. You slip— Your rope catches you as your feet scrape the bottom of the shaft. The seam is clogged with the bones of miners. Above, cantankeri begin to stir...

Hard labour
The rock is pockmarked with earlier attempts. Most tunnels have collapsed, but you find one that is intact'
Armed with pick and lantern, you crawl into the fossil deep. To you dismay, you discover cantankeri sleep over the geodes of hours, as though incubating eggs. Mufflers and nerves of steel are required to uncouple the two. Happily, you possess both. Squeezing between the heaving bulks of slumbering cantankeri, you make your way back. Your crew almost cheer when you return triumphant, but, thankfully, they remember where they are. | |||

The heart of the fossil
You locate a likely shaft away from the worst wreckage of the disaster.
Within, you uncover slumbering forms of cantankeri, bulging from the rocks that half encases them. Pressing deeper still, you find a rich seam of hours, guarded by the sleeping beasts. You take as much as you dare, but your getaway isn't quick enough. The cantankeri begin to stir, disturbed by your excavations.

Swift departure
Stokers stoke the boilers; navigators consult charts. All are eager to be away from this forsaken rock.
