The Windward Company Factory is a Sunless Skies Story Event.
Story description[]
The factories of Port Prosper's East End belch out smoke. Inside, hours mined from the Mother of Mountains are refined. The workers live in tenement blocks adjoining the smokestacks, and are rarely seen in the rest of Port Prosper. Today, the owner of the Windward Refinery is allowing visitors to tour his factory.

Speak with the workers
How goes the work?
|
|
A hollow-eyed worker shakes her head. Her face is lined, but her hands are soft and supple. "Dipped 'em in once too often. You've got to be fast. But it could be worse—" She indicates a host of wizen-handed young men, nursing their arthritic hands by an open fire. "No housing in Prosper we can afford on our wages but those given by the Company. No time to look for work, and no way of disguising what our trade was." She sighs. "But we have all the time in the world."

Speak with the owners
How goes the work?
|
|
The factory manager removes his stovepipe and wipes away a bead of sweat. "It's been difficult, getting everything ready for the visit. Port Prosper's laws demand transparency of industry. But it's worth it for the safety of our workers. Production has been up. More hours refined than ever. See there – " he indicates another visitor, a youthful notable, "He has received some of Prosper's own barrels! Our labours are going so well, even we here out in the provinces are beginning to reap the rewards."

Lurk in the shadows
Loiter, even.
|
|
Failed event |
Game note: This will always increase your Eastward Reputation. |
You slip into the shadows to better observe proceedings. Hidden away, you see all sorts of things you suspect the factory owners would prefer you not to. Barrels being assigned to destinations based on bribes rather than need. Fatigued workers revivified by sips of unrefined hours. Shifts extended and extended again, for time has little meaning here. You are disturbed by a sudden cry of, "I say, who's that lurking behind the barrels." It is time to be off.

From your vantage point in the gloom, you see all sorts of things the other visitors are not privy to. Barrels being assigned to destinations based on bribes rather than need. Fatigued workers revivified by sips of unrefined hours. Several respond poorly and are hauled away to the infirmary. Only the most youthful and vigorous workers have been assigned to the workstations the tours pass through. The rest wait in less sightly rooms, in the shadows. One aged man catches your eye and winks.

Admire the factory
The chimneys belch out sulphur, the workers sound the hammers in time with the striking of a bell, hours come in unrefined and leave, refined.

You comment on the harmonies of form, how the soaring vaults of the ceilings reflect the aspirations of the workers below, you declaim how hours spent result in hours saved. The factories are a monument to time well spent. Neither time nor man is wasted here. From one of the assembly lines, a worker gives you a particularly evil look.
